it's actually incredibly liberating knowing that we have one chance to make as much of a difference in this world as we can! if i was going to live forever, i would want to live this same life forever--not some abstract "heaven" that i don't know anything about. it seems scary to believe in an afterlife when we can never know what it will entail!

I'm aware that one day I'll die and rot in the ground, but it doesn't really bother me right now. I'm still young and I have a lot of time to live a meaningful life, and the brevity of life is all the more incentive to make sure the one life I have was worthwhile.
I'd actually rather rot than be embalmed, the idea of half-rotten bodies laying in boxes in the ground seems disgustingly morbid to me. It seems better to me to just bury a body, and let its chemical components return to the soil, where they can fertilize plants and bacteria and return to the food chain, to live again as some other life form.

Not really.
Ice cream cones are short lived, too. They melt quickly. But I don't become sad or depressed when I'm eating them. I just enjoy it while I have it.
I have long ago accepted that this life is a short one. So, I try to live it well.
Do you really think it's better to fritter away this short life we have on a superstition? Whether you believe it or not, we do just die and rot. The only life we have after death is in the memories of others. You might think that a life is depressing because we eventually die, but I think it is more depressing to think that this is some cosmic test where we have to live with eternal punishment or eternal reward based on whether we happen to pick the correct god.

As an a-theistic Buddhist, I know that this life is just one of many.
You need to do some studying - atheists are not a single group, thinking the same way, or believing the same things.
I often wonder why so many "christians" waste so much time, of the one life they believe they have, spreading hate in this website. That makes me feel sad.

No. Just the opposite. This is the only chance we get in life and it makes it all the more precious! We do good things without having some promise of a reward when we die. We cherish each moment and LIVE our lives. I mean, come on, what would the point of this life be if we have eternal life after we die?

no. It makes me feel happy that I am able to live for the present, and plan for the future without worrying that I won't make it into heaven and therefore burn for eternity. ALSO, while I do have morals, atc. I do not have to worry that I am constantly sinning or breaking a rule that God has set forth for me. I am not afraid to die, and thinking of death does not bother me. AND, you, regardless of what religion you are, will rot as well. Your spirit may go to heaven, whatever, but your body will be eaten by the worm, just as mine will.

Can I answer this even though I'm an agnostic? It doesn't depress me when I think about it. I think it will be like it was before I was born. Oblivion is never a pleasant thought, but since I have no idea what really happens after death, I'll just let what happens...happen. I'd much rather think about what I can do in this life to help others and have fun!

Since you ask with such apparent sympathy, let me tell you no. I've come to terms with death, and so I really enjoy my moment in the Universe.
The inverse of your question to us might be: religious people, how can you enjoy this world if you are so fixated on the next? It makes me think you are missing so much, and that makes me feel sad for you. What if you are wrong; then you end up with nothing, and you haven't even really enjoyed the brief time you were given.

No. I think it is alot better to live with the truth up front. Yes it is final, but there is no reason to think we get a second chance as an immortal.
We are all mortal, and life is finite. The other is just wishful thinking.

Um... ahem... apparently you're lacking a lot of info on what atheism is. I'm Buddhist, essentially atheist and I don't believe in what you just wrote at all. Perhaps if you do some study on the subject you'll feel less "sad".
