Like the movie Starship Troopers, people do not get the right to vote unless they serve the government in some fashion for a period of 2 years. I think this may be a good idea. You cannot vote unless you serve in teh military, the police, city or natiional government, or a non-profit agency that gives to the people for 2 years. What do you think? Do you think that it will make for a better nation?

➔ Civic Participation
A lot of you are talking about the foundation of this nation, and constitutional rights. The constitution neverensured teh rights to all people. That had to be amended and done through the courts. Just ask an Afican American or a woman when they were allowed to vote. The history of this country has been all about restricting the vote. Once it was finally granted to everyone (1960s) our government has gotten worse every election. The tradition of this nation is to restrict who gets to vote, and I believe it should be restricted to civic participation not race or gender.

That would be a bad idea. Any veteran will tell you that he or she fights for choice. Pathetic armies emerge when all they have to fight for is a government that controls all their decisions and actions.

No. The government was set up through the Constitution to protect the rights of the people. Plus, a large percentage of the population is already quite apathetic and doesn't vote...so they clearly will not be participating in any of the civil or military service. It is a quite creative idea, though.

I think its a good idea it should be a privilege to vote .The society would be better of if people were more involved . If your not informed about a candidate its better that you just stay home. if you ask someone why the chose a particular candidate 70 percent wouldn't even know . I think it would be good for the youth to learn discipline and it would serve them later in life. I served three years in the Army and it was the best decision i ever made

The government exists to serve the people, not the other way around. Demanding that one serve the government as a qualification for voting rights is like insisting you must stock the shelves before you can shop at the market.
Be that as it may everyone should spend a part of their life in service to others. It's a good thing to do, but hardly a requirement to enjoy the rights afforded us in the Constitution.

Absolutely not! Nor should it be watered down by the Electoral College to allow elections like the Gore/Bush tragedy to be improperly held. Those 1/2 million votes should have been individually counted.
Each citizen has the total right to vote and it is not a privelege but a right. Everyone no matter what they do or don't do should never be deprived of this important part of the democracy they guarantees our freedoms.

I liked the movie, Starship Troopers. I liked the book even better. Everyone should read it.
I am completely against limiting voting rights in any way...., well, my personal opinion is that voters at least should be able to read.
But it has always been my philoshopy that only VETERANS should hold elective office. This is the responsibility of the voters to see that it happens.
Always vote for the VETERAN, regardless of party. At least you know that a VETERAN cared about this country enough to risk his/her life to defend it.

That is not the principle that this nation was founded on! Anyone that is a citizen, and is registered, has a right to vote, unless they have forfeited that right by committing a felonious crime!
