He was the sacrificial lamb. The Jewish religious customs required them to periodically sacrifice a lamb on the altar to atone for their sins. Jesus changed that when He allowed Himself to be crucified. The cross was basically an altar, and the sins of the world were cast on Him. Now, we don't have to slaughter lambs every so often; we simply have to choose to believe that Jesus died and rose again as our salvation.

To be a sin sacrifice for humans who follow him. Sinful flesh died that day. He took the punishment for us.

According to I Peter 3:18, "..Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit…”

To take the punishment which you and I deserved, for sin.
To give us opportunity to be set free from the power of sin and death.
To give us a new life in Jesus Christ.
