If I had to buy one machine for my home, I would get an elliptical. It's low impact and works your whole body.

Elliptical machines are the best. You have a low impact work out that works your lower body, upper body and gets your heart rate up. There are even ways to work on your mid section on them.

I favor exercise bikes just because its a cardio activity that works your lower body. Most of your muscle is concentrated from the hips to the knees, and working these muscles burns more fat than most machines. They are cheaper than ellipticals.
