Cindy Sheehan 'resigns' as protest leader
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Cindy Sheehan, the soldier's mother who galvanized an anti-war movement with her month long protest outside President Bush's ranch, said Tuesday she's done being the public face of the movement."I've been
wondering why I'm killing myself and wondering why the Democrats caved in to George Bush," Sheehan told The Associated Press while driving from her property in Crawford to the airport, where she planned to return to her native California
"I'm going home for awhile to try and be normal," she said.In what she described as a "resignation letter," Sheehan wrote in her oline diary on the "Daily Kos" blog: "Good-bye America ... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it.
"It's up to you now."

cindy.conts/Sheehan began a grass roots peace movement in August 2005
when she set up camp outside the Bush ranch for 26 days, asking to talk with the President about the death of her
son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan. Casey Sheehan was 24 when he was killed in
Baghdad. "Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the
next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few
months while Democrats andRepublicans play politics with human lives." she said the most devastating conclusion
she had reached "was that Casey did indeed die for nothing ... killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think".It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price
for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most."Sheehan criticized "blind party loyalty" as a danger, no matter which side it involved, and
said the current two-party system is "corrupt!"

I NOTICE MANY KEEP SAYING CINDY'S SON JOINED BECAUSE HE WANTED TO SERVE. CINDY STATED HER SON, AS WELL AS MANY INDIGENT PEOPLE..people TOO POOR TO PAY FOR A COLLEGE EDUCATION joined the service to get help with college fee. We KNOW most people who joined did so before there was a war and many did so in hopes that we would not go to war before they get their education. PEOPLE knew what KERRY meant, when he said something simular, but as usual REPUBLICANS TWISTED HIS WORDS and DEMOCRATS, now the underlings for REPUBLICANS, went along with twisting his words!

the question persists: Does military service still pay?On purely economic terms, the experts say yes. A high-school grad with few prospects and no way to pay for college can find unmatched benefits, marketable skills and bonuses for enlisting and then re-enlisting, even as much as $38,000 for later schooling.

9 percent of men and 6 percent of women cite danger as a reason for not entering military service; 6 percent men and 4 percent of women stated military service was against theirbeliefs.Relative
to whites and Hispanics, young black men and women are more likely to mention pay as a reason for joining, and less likely to mention educational funding or duty to country. As reasons for not entering military service, white men and women are more likely to mention other career interests, or to object to the length of commitment, perhaps because they have more career opportunities than minority men and women. Finally, familial obligations are mentioned as an obstacle to military service more frequently by women (compared to men) and Hispanics (compared to whites and blacks).http://www.dod.mil/execsec/adr98/apdx_g.html

no matter how you feel about the issue she stood for , you should complement the woman she stood up for what she believed.
she showed how the system could work if you are willing to stand up to something you belive is wrong.
god bless her and her son
he died for all of you who want to seat here and bash his mother

Cindy Sheehan was a grieving mother who got caught up in a movement to link Iraq with Viet Nam and recapture the 60's.
Well, you can't recapture a rapture no matter how many peace signs you hold up or t-shirts you tie-die. Those folks grew up and are now running the government she hates.
She tried to rally a protest movement and failed because, today, the only way to get thousands out for a cause is to have a big name all-star FREE concert. People will go, hold up signs, have fun, and go home and forget about the cause.
Proof is in the voting, isn't it? Of all Americans eligible to vote, only half register. Of that half, only about half actually vote. Cindy Sheehan was focused on the wrong cause. She should have been protesting voter apathy.

Yelling? You mean those who communicate via text LIKE THIS? Or actual in your face yelling? If so, I can understand. Truth is, most Christians (most religious people I think fit this description pretty well) probably think you have an unrealised potential within you. They could see something that you yourself do not see. That alone should cause you to consider a bit more what you are hearing from them. Sometimes those who are trying to communicate say the right words, but say them the wrong way. You can't really hold that against them. And the simple truth is that the "truth" to one person can be perceived as a lie to another. It is in perception. Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience with some Christians. I hope that your experience with them improves. That may be something you do, it may be something they do.

One of the great things about this country is the right to express what you believe. She excercised that right. Ironically, her son chose to serve this country in the military. I have not seen anything that indicated he regretted that decision. I know when I served 8 years during the Vietnam conflict I disagreed with policy but I chose to serve anyway. Based on my experiences when I was in the service I think that Americans should support the soldiers and put their efforts in changing the politicians. And if we do not get the change we want, it means that the majority does not agree. This is all part of what makes our country a place that people from all over the world want to come to.
As a father of 3 sons, a step father of 3 more sons and a grandfather of 3 boys and a girl, my sympathies are with Cindy over her loss. I have had losses in my life but I have not yet felt the loss of a child or grandchild.

All you people who are saying shes nuts or UN-American the same should be said about you .Do you have any idea what democracy is ? This is America !!! She has every right to protest you would to if you weren't so concerned about who won American Idol . The Democrats rolled over and gave Bush exactly what he wanted and betrayed all the people that voted them in office in the past election . She gave her son to this country.lost her marriage and now has been betrayed by the very people she believed could make a difference .What have you ever given to this county that makes you so American.

I was wondering how long she could keep her blinders on? You can't blame her for trying. She's a dying breed. She did what she could & now it's time for her to have some rest from all the craziness. I hope she knows how much stepping down can further a cause that seems hopeless. Good things will come from this...guaranteed! California needs her more than Washington or Texas does. Welcome home, Sister!

Cindy Sheehan is nuts. I have no problem being against the war, the things she has said are incredulous. First off her son CHOSE to return, now maybe he would've been sent back to Iraq anyway, but when he did go back it was his doing. So how does he feel that his mother is doing this.
Like in her letter, if she doesn't like it she can go with Chavez who shut down open media and is attack his own people who protest him. She did say she thinks he is a better person than Bush.

She started out receiving sympathy from the nation as a grieving mother of a soldier. Somewhere along the line, she started getting "too out there" and doing irrational things and doing a disservice to the thousands of families who also lost loved ones in the war. She's quitting because her 15 minutes of fame are over.

I think that Cindy Sheehan expressed her initial grief through rage and now she can withdraw and get on with her grieving for her son in a more subdued manner.

I felt sympathy for her when her son passed away. But she pushed the issue & sympathy too far. She was a grieving mother out of control.
Her son believed in the military or else he wouldn't have joined the service.
She needs to support her son more than she ever did by supporting the military.
Protesting is fine but do with respect for others. You may not agree with their opinion but we live in a country where you can have an opposing opinion.

it is sad that she left the cause but very understandable. she understood, early on, that Bush doesn't give a tinker's damn about the lives he is sacrificing to further his private agenda. But when those that said they would stand up and fight him caved-in to bully tactics that had to have been a painful blow.
Cindy got the ball rolling, hopefully we can score a win with it and get our people out of the Iraqi mire they're caught in.
