My bf and I have been together for a year and he just recently moved in and I have noticed his sleeping problems. I have researched it and found it is called parasomia. He sleep walks, talks, screams, eats, has sex, and even fights. He also has night terrors and sleep paralasis. I understand this can be a serious problem but I am in need of some ideas to help the situation. right now he drinks himself to sleep and still only gets a couple hours of sleep. They have put him on ambien before and it just made things worse. Any ideas???

Oh alcohol will DEFINITELY make it worse. He has got to stop drinking. And get off the Ambien. He needs to have a sleep study done. Have his physician refer him to a sleep center near you.

Ambien is not a good sleep medication for the symptoms you describe. People who don't have parasomnia have problems waking up shortly after taking the Ambien.
He should talk to his doctor about a different medication. Something that is not habit forming (like Trazadone or one of the newer medications for sleep, like Rozerem).
But the alcohol has GOT to go. If he can't stop the drinking, then he has bigger problems than just a sleep disorder and he should talk to his doctor about that, too.
Good luck.

Most people with this problem cant shut down their mind at night some are worse than others..my wasn't as bad but a therapist can really help with the meds and the possibly unresolved issues that he is dealing with. There are new meds that help reduce the chance of nighttime "adventures" to this is very dangerous for both of you be careful and see as many Dr's as needed until you get a solution

I wonder if Rozeram might help. It's supposed to get you into the deeper REM sleep. Maybe that would get him past the place where he can walk and talk and scream and stuff.

Get him to go to a doctor and he's got to cut out the drinking too. When you drink alcohol, you may feel sleepy at first, but later in the night, it actually wakes you up.

Good luck! :)

He needs to really talk to a doctor. But for your peace of mind and more sleep I think you might to want to consider separate bedrooms.

you are not responsible for his illness, and you cannot help him. he has to find his own answers. you sound really very co-dependant and somewhat manipulative, suggest you get some help yourself for that.
