It depends on who is fighting the war. Most nations are concerned with money (power) and/or religion. The US has gone to war over the years to protect our national interests. Sometimes this is for economical reasons, other times it is in response to some antagonism, or both. With major nations (US, Russia, Europe), the reasons get more complicated. In the third world (mainly Africa and the Middle East), power and religion seem to be the rule.

Well, Emy V, you make it sound as if the entire world is at war. In a sense, it is. There is a war of ideas, a war of religion, a war of politics. Some people say that no matter what, we must do right, as when President Bush sent the military to Iraq.
As long as there have been more than 2 people on Earth, people have declared war on each other. Humans are a very aggresive animal.
But, for those who say they want peace, my question is: which is worse? Death from war or death from starvation? Millions of people were starving to death in Bangladesh 60 years ago; they are still starving to death by the millions. In China, people are killed to harvest their organs. Around the world, people are dying by the millions just because they had the wrong parents (ethnicity) or because they cast the wrong vote (politics) or because they have the wrong religion (as was the case in Iraq).
People fear war, which is good: war tends to kill people. But, a quick death in war is preferntial to a lingering death from Altzheimers, diabetes, arthritis or any of the other diseases. It is more humane than abortions or genocide.

I think religion plays a big role.... Especially in Iraq and Afghanistan right now... Its always about the "radical Islamic Extremist" ... Key word, Islam....
The term "Jihad"... Holy War
The entire Middle East hates Isreal... Why, cause its a Jewish state.... Atleast that what I seem to understand from it.
Personally I believe its everyone unwilling to accept other religions... Everyone thinks their religion is the correct one, and everyone else is wrong... If we can just accept, and understand, other religions and their followers, then maybe we would have less conflicts.
Edit... Someone keeps marking everyone with a thumbs down whenever that person mentions religion.... I think that proves my point....

War as an extension and service of political policy.
To mobilize and entire economy and population to go and sustain a long war is not done on an emotional whim, war is declared after careful consideration if it will serve the political policy of a nation state.

Time has not changed the basic rules
Greed, Fear, Religion.
Killing in the name of God, isn't that special?
The others are obvious. Folks can lay a lot of smoke but that is why you have wars.. One country has one of the three and go after the other country.

War is for power hungry nations, struggle for power, supremacy, genocide, destruction of cultural and civilization. At present war is for oil field in the name of establishing democracy. At last capturing lucrative market for selling arms, emanations and their product.
