won't you just put her in pull ups. because you never know when she is going to have an accident.

Try the underwear, but expect accidents. Potty training means that you will have success sometimes and sometimes you won't. Last year and the preschool where I work we had a child who would use the bathroom consistently as long as she wore underwear, but when her mom put her in diapers she would just go in her diaper (after all, who wants their playtime to be interrupted by a bathroom break if they can just go where they are). Switching back and forth from underwear to diaper will only confuse her. Some children will potty train as young as your daughter, but don't be discouraged if you have a set back. Some will potty train then revert. If she wants to be potty trained you should have no problem being successful. If she doesn't want to cooperate, it won't happen. I would take her shopping and let her pick out her very own big girl underwear. She will be more interested in wearing them if they are special ones that she picked.

Of course you should put undies on her at all times. Once she shows an interest and desire to use the potty you're already in the midst of potty training. Its a point of no return.. unless of course you want to have a battle of will later when the novelty has worn off.
You have to be committed though to follow it through to the end. She needs that consistancy in order for it to work. Dress her in things that can be thrown out when you're on the town, and dont be afraid to leave a full shopping cart in the middle of the line beacuse of an accident.
Its such a short time out of your life, i promise it'll be over soon.
Throw out the diapers and dont go back. Pull ups are diapers, and nothing else. Dont use them. You can buy chucks for the bed incase of accidents. If you have to, wake her up half way through the night at the SAME TIME each night to pee. Her body will get used to it and eventually she will do it herself. If need be.
I was trained completely without incident at 18 months. I traied my siblings. my brother was trained by 2 years (with a lapse after the lid fell on his peepee) and the youngest by 2 as well.

Good for her! You could definitely start her on cotton underpants, but make sure she wears plastic-lined training pants over top for now (the days of "accidents" are far from over). Kids her age often have to be reminded that they need to go, and when they're engrossed in play, they don't realize there's a need until it's too late. Training pants are great because they look like big kid underpants. She'll be proud to be a big girl!
I would suggest that you keep her in diapers (the underpants-ish pull-up variety) at night in order to spare yourself the laundry!
Good luck to you and your little girl!

Amosunknown has a great answer but I would add to it.
I think the Potty Stool is the best thing ever for kids!
Both my son and daughter did really well using the Potty Stool. And for different reasons. My son loved using the stool to pee standing up into the toilet. By standing to pee, he could see what was happening and connect the sensations. Also, the stool gives him stability so he never makes a mess and he grows his self-confidence by doing things on his own (this helps Mommy too!)
My daughter did fantastic with the stool too, but for her she loved the independence and took pride in being self-sufficient.
The stool is pricey but totally worth it because it is very well made and kids use it for years. In your case, both your kids would benefit.
You can see pictures at http://www.thepottystool.com
I think this would work miracles for your family....it really has for mine!
