a limit switch is an lectromechanical device. It is placed in the control circuitry of a machine system . For example:- A motor is used to open a door. At the end of the door, a limit switch is palced. The door, when gets fully opened, will depress the limit switch lever and thus the control circuit of motor becomes incomplete and the motor stops.
A proximity switch is also like a limit switch, but it is not mechanical. It could be either magnetic or infrared etc.
For example:- Lift stops provided on each floor have proximity switches.

A proximity switch uses non contact technology such as inductance, capacitance or ultra sonic etc. A limit switch would indicate a mechanical switch although technically its is a switch that is used to detect the limit of movement so could be any type of switch including proximity switch.

A proximity switch changes state when some object gets within a specified distance of the switch.
A limit switch changes state when an object reaches the end of its range of motion or perhaps a better way to say it is that the limit switch defines the end of an object's range of motion

A proximity switch is just the particular technique used to detect a close object. It uses a change in inductive or capacitive electrical properties that occurs when an object of the right composition or size gets nears its electrical field.
Since it has no moving parts it is good for dirty or wet locations that must reliably sense the presence of an object without mechanical failures or internal corrosion. Those applications include switches used to detect that an object has reached its travel limit or switches used to detect passing objects.
The other typical techniques of detecting those objects is by mechanical movement of the internal switch parts or by photo or ultrasonic detection of a nearby or passing object.
"Limit" is just one application and counting or presence detection are other more popular applications.

mostly mechcanical limit switches use for AC current voltage and for DC current use proximity
mechanical switches cost wise cheeper than proximity .life wise less than proximity but.

iPod touch is thinner than the latter (: iphone can call, and has ipod and internet functions. but the ipod functions are limited to music, videos and wifi store but ipod has extra photos and home screen. internet in both gadgets are the same, but the iphone has multi touch and proximity sensor, which is better coz then it saves power when you are making a call coz then it switches off the light. i guess iphone is better then you don't have to carry everything around but ipod touch is newer!

Proximity would be when you get near it by a specific distance
Limit is when you reach it.

much more my friend...essentially have alot of the same components however the iphone (which i have) has so many extra applications and toys you can mess around with not to mention a camera that takes stellar pics. The 3rd part apps that are on the iphone allow you to do things you never imagined with a phone. Get the iphone, you wont need the ipod touch.
