I want to buy a great surround sound home theater system! My living room space is on the smaller side too. I love Bose but it cost a lot!

Bose is great for a living room or media room, but they certainly are not the BEST system you can buy. That being said, a set of Bose speakers offers you a LOT of bang for your buck. I wouldn't recommend buying the "lifestyle" system because of its limited expandability. The Lifestyle systems tend to be a few steps behind the general trend of home theater advancement (watch and see how long it will take for the Lifestyle systems to be upgraded to 7.1 Surround and HD DVD/Blu-ray capability). My brother-in-law's Lifestyle console started making a horrible rattling noise whenever a DVD is playing about one month after the warranty expired.
If you want a great sound system that's visually unobtussive for not a lot of money, look at the Accoustimass system. It's just speakers; you provide all the components. Get a decent receiver (Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha are nice), a DVD player, and I think you'll really like what you end up with. You can set up a really nice system this way for a lot less than the cost of the Lifestyle system. Right now I'm running the older model of the Accoustimass 15 speaker set, a Sony DVD player, and an Onkyo receiver. Getting great results...

Don't listen to anyone who has responded before me. Bose is a very good product but a little on the pricey side. Bose is made to direct reflect so that no matter how you place the speakers, your room will fill with sound. At the same time, the sound all depends on your ear. If it sounds good to you than that is all you need. If you really like Bose and you have a small place, Bose makes the 3-2-1 system that is a little cheaper but will still give you a great sound that will fill up your room. As an example, I prefer Infinity home theater speakers because that is what my ear prefers. It sounds good to me and that is what I think is the best. You might want to check other brands to see what your ears think and compare. If you come back to Bose, than that is what you should go for. Good Luck.

Skip the Bose!!!
A set of Av123 X-Series 5.1 surround speaker system and Pioneer A/V reciever will outperfom Bose and for less cost.

So from personal experience I'd say "No". My girlfriend bought the Lifestyle series 2 years ago for the same reason you are thinking of small and good sound. Well that's not necessarily the case, Bose does sound pretty good but not for the price nor the complexity of setting it up and using it. Universal remotes will not manage the Bose they might claim to but I've tried several expensive ones and none of them did so that means you will need your Bose remote and TV/Cable/Satellite remote. I have an Onkyo 700 oddly enough I bought mine 2 months before I met my girlfriend and she liked the sound of it better but she didn't like the fact that the receiver and DVD player were separate. But when we moved into together we used the Onkyo because we only needed one remote to manage it all. Yes the speakers are bigger but they can hidden. Good luck.

BOSE =Buy Only Substandard Equipment

Stay clear, Bose was revolutionary in the 70's to early 80's. they been focusing on marketing and not research ever since. the industry has far surpassed their quality level.
Bose lacks in mid range, making the speaker very in your face and harsh, which half way thru a movie becomes very fatiguing.

Marshal had some good recomendations, i realing like the Paradigm. Also look into NHT speakers great at thier price point. and marantz makes excelent recievers as well.

Bose is not Hi-fi. It's a long way from it. Bose has gotten by on clever marketing, not quality products.

Try this: http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html

For a good small system, you can spend a lot less money on a Klipsch Pro Media, or just get an Onkyo Receiver, Paradigm Bookshelf speakers, and Onix x-sub from AV123. This system will cost about $1000, and blow the Bose away.

Depends what you want and what your budget is, if you are looking for a home theater system I would not go with a sony, I would buy each component based on what I was looking for in sound both with highs and lows. There are a lot of products out there with a lower price range.

no i do not own one. why, cause bose IMO isnt what its cracked up to be. i think there mids and highs are not bad, but they almost dont have lows. i too was one to think Bose was the best. then i stepped out of best buy and listend to stuff at a private shop. i was blown away by a few differnt speaker brands. the one i went with was Klipsch. not the Klipsch they sell at best buy, but the Referance Series. great stuff. you should check it out.

Bose is not the best.

I agree with Marshall G, the recommendation he gave will blow Bose away any day.

Hi.As you can see from the response of others they either like them or they don't ,which makes it difficult for you to choose. i would not buy them myself as i don't care for their sound. I have always recommended that you listen before you buy as you are the one that has to live with the sound .A lot of people are not Hi.Fi. enthusiasts therefore they should not be told what to buy .I hope you make the right decision and are happy with what you get.
