I get the same headaches all the time, but mine are in the upper neck as well. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with them and I just want to die. The cause of these are that I am clinching my jaw at night and during the day (don't realize I am doing it) so I got a bite splint made from my dentist. It really helps a lot.
My doctor put me on topamax (worked up to 100mg ) twice a day and it helped the most. I have since taken myself off of it because of the side effects (memory & hair loss). But if you can put up with those side effects, it is one of the best that I have been on and believe me I have been on headache meds for most of my life and seen many neurologists. Excedrin really works for headaches as well but watch out for rebounds.
What also helps is a really hot shower and while in the shower, use neck stretching exercises under the hot water. After shower, have someone give you a deep head and neck massage.
Everything together works wonders for me, hope it does for you as well.

We have treated 15 - 20 yrs cases.
There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, sweet fruits, milk, rice and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
