I am 25 and am no longer working but I have this burning desire to go to Africa or somewhere to help make a difference... I know, I know start in your own backyard. But I have done that and I want to do more. My heart has always been with kids so even a children's hospital in southern California where I live would be a good place to start. Any ideas?

The American Red Cross-they too, go all over the world, and they work with plenty of children.
I happen to be a ARC volunteer and I can assure you it's a great place to start.

I've always wanted to go to Africa to help impoverished families, and the best way to start is by donating to World Vision. The website has specific causes such as well digging and mosquito nets that you can donate to and you can choose what country the money will benefit. Also try finding a number to call them and ask about volunteering or working for them hands-on in another country to directly help. I'm sure they'll appreciate great people like you.

Unicef, and the Peace Corp are always looking for more hands and hearts. You can contact them to see what you can do to help. In the meantime, starting in your own backyard, you can contact local community centers which often do remarkable things to change lives for the better with incredibly small budgets and would welcome a volunteer with a generous spirit.

You can go the California State website - Community Services & Development (CSD) is a department of the California Health and Human Services Agencyhttp://www.csd.ca.gov/providers.html and see what organizations are local to you.
