He freaks everytime I mention a bath or shower. Once he is in the water he likes it and has fun. The problem is convincing him to get in the water w/ out kicks or screams. ?????

All the answers above seem like good ideas. My 3-year old son hates baths and showers too, but to end it I had to go to extreme measures. One night he said he didnt want to take a bath so I said "Okay, i'm gonna get in your bath then" In the usual reverse-psychology method and when he called my bluff I ended up getting in, fully clothed head to toe. I am by no means a small woman, so it was a little uncomfortable, but made him laugh a lot and since that night all I have to do is say "Okay, i'm gonna go get in the bath and play with all your cool toys and bubbles" and he knows i'm serious, so he gets in first.
Again, a little extreme . . . but strangely it worked.
Good luck!

Don't metion bath or shower. Just draw the water and put him in it. My 4 year old when though that phase and I took him to the store and we got bath fizz balls and color tablets for bath time (tub tablets) bubble bath and those sponge things that you can though in the water that look like pills. Also we did the whole if you take a bath and get in like a big boy you can have a sucker (Keeps the mess in the tub and not in the house) also reward him with a good week of taking baths with out fussing to the park or to a friends. 3 year olds aren't hard to deal with just remember that some times you have to have rewards to make tub time fun! Good luck.

My 3 year old has the same attitude when it comes to his bath. Bubble bath unfortunately didn't help me as my boy is a "purist" which also means we have to remove any sock lint from his toes before they dislodge in the water. Once he's in though, no problem...then there's the issue of getting him out! The reality is, your son may be trying to control his own destiny like mine does and is probably smart enough to realize that bathtime = bedtime. Kids at his age live in the here and now and have to be motivated to move on to the next activity. Things that have worked to motivate my son:
Try to give his current activity closure; Have a fun tub toy at hand to stimulate interest in the new activity; make a game of it like walking like a duck to the "pond"; keep it fun and light while in the tub.To get him out, you need to once again motivate him to the next (fun) activity which may be a simple as letting him choose a book (before bed). Fill him with compliments when he embraced what you've asked him to do.

Maybe you can have a special treat for after the bath. Tell him let's go get you cleaned and then we'll get a cookie, or something like that. Give him something to look forward to after the bath and be nonchalant about the bath.

Try going out and finding a really neat bath toy and telling him its only for the tub or maybe allow him to help pick it out, or try taking him shopping for his own special bubble bath and let him pick it out!
or one thing my kids liked was blowing bubbles in the tub it was very inexpensive and fun!

Maybe try not saying the word "bath" or "shower" and coming up with a code word instead?

Did you try bath crayons? My son was scared after loving the bath and we bought him the washable crayons and now we can't take him out of it.

try putting toys he likes, bubbles, pop bottles that are rinsed out. fill the tub and let him get in on his own. do not force him. I had that problem with my 3 year old but if I turn cartoons off put the dogs out and just sit in bathroom in comes and gets in he likes pop bottles he fills them and pours them on his toys.

well, right now, i wouldn't encourage him getting in on his own, he could fall in and drown when unsupervised. bathtub crayons were the coolest thing ever. show him you can color on the walls with them in the tub. just keep them out of reach when not in use in the tub. bubbles are also fun, usually.
