I bought a used truck from a dealer - and I am already having trouble with it. I want to find the person who owned it before me (one owner) and ask him about any known issues there may be with the truck.

This way, I can go to MY dealer and tell him the problems with the car which is under warrenty for the next 30 days.

Smooth, eh?

I agree with the first guy.

Also, I wonder what you plan to do anyway? What information do you plan on getting from the old owner? Things that he had replaced or repaired? Or things that were wrong with the vehicle and weren't fixed? Reoccuring problems?

I doubt the dealer is going to fix anything that isn't currently broken or having problems. Even if the old owner told you the vehicle sometimes had transmission problems (or whatever), if there is no sign of those problems, the dealer isn't just going to have the transmission fixed anyway. He's not just going to take the old owners word for it. And if it is currently having problems, well, then you already know about it don't you?

You could get a carfax report and try to track down the old owner, but I just don't see how that is going to help you any.

You need to read your 30 day warranty. It is VERY limited and has a mileage requirement as well. It spells out in detail what is covered. It is difficult when selling a used vehicle to know everything wrong with it. For the protection of the buyer and the dealer, the federal government came up with a mandatory LIMITED 30 day warranty to protect consumers and dealers because you are buying a USED vehicle. If you would have bought it from a private party you get nothing! Happy driving!

Smooth but likely not possible. You would have to get a carfax report and then go to the state in which the car was originally registered. Unless you are a cop, bank, and have some special clearance, they are likely not going to issue that information. Imagine how creepy it would be to get a call from someone who bought your car two owners down the road. Besides, you are better off getting the car evaluated by someone who is impartial and does not know about the car's history.
