The American Pediatrics Association recommends breastfeeding at least the first year and after that for as long as it is mutually desirable. Many people choose, therefore, child initiated weaning. Depending on the child, this can happen anywhere from a year and half to as late as three or four and in some cases five years old. In many cultures it is common for babies to breast feed up to five years of age. Unfortunately, this is not the norm in America. I think that it is wonderful that you have breast fed for this long and should continue doing so as long as you and your baby are both happy with the arrangement. Don't let someone talk you into weaning because your child is "too old."

Is up to the mother to decide when bubs is ready to cope with it and she's had enough. It's not just milk you know, it's the whole thing being safe secure close to mum. The world puts a sexual content on breast feeding a child, which is far from the truth. What happened to nurturing our young as nature intended, why do people make a mockery of us girls that choose to feed our children for as long as we think our children need us to. I chose to nurture my 4 children til they were all over 2yrs, they not grown perverts, they healthy happy closely bonded kids that i'm very proud of. Cheers!

Wow, I commend you for being able to breastfeed for almost the full recommended age of 2 years!!! Takes a strong woman to do that. I guess the only answer would be that he won't stop until you take it away. That has to be the hardest thing to do when they breastfeed for that long. My sister in law breastfed 3 faithfully as you have. Her husband ended up taking the last one on a weekend long trip without mom. When he came back home after 3 days, he was weaned! Good luck and kudos to you.

I applaud at you breast feeding for so long. I think it is up to the kid to wean more than the mother. There will come a time when your child would know that mother's milk is not enough for him and that is the time he/she will demand other worldly foods. That time you can transition him to other foods.

all kids are different some give it up early on and some seem like they will go on as long as you let them..... i b/f my son till 3 but slowly put limitations on it.... ex. not in public. I was really into attached parenting and self weaning (letting them decided when they are ready to stop). but before the on set of his 3rd b-day i decided i wanted to call it quits by 3.... my son starting pre-school had a lot to do with it (if the child is home with you all day and nt. it seems like it will be much harder to break them) ... i wouldnt allow him to nurse at nt, or in public, and when he did ask to nurse i would say okay but only till i count to ten (and slowly count to ten on both sides), these are just some ideas for you..... trust me if they are sick or get hurt you can always nurse when ever need be (that does come in handy !).. I am tottaly for extended nursing but in our society it is precieved so negatively that is the main reason i decied to wean at 3... he wasnt heart broken but it did take some time . good luck and great job !

You can technically breastfeed forever. But it is not nutritionally necessary passed the age of 1. Yea, its a cheap way to feed a baby and the best nutrients they can get but when they are old enough for whole milk, are eating finger foods and what it sounds like for a 21 month old, most likely already eating happy meals, breast feeding is probably more for the mother at this point than the kid.

When you stop! If he is almost two he should be able to hold a cup and eat food..so stop breast feeding whenever you are ready.

Most people ween a baby from the bottle by age 1. I think that babies should also be weened from the breast around that age too. My son weened himself at 10 months.

technically the average amount of years your breasts will produce milk if you continue allowing him to breast feed isw 4.5 years but I would recommend stopping long before then!
