I was just hired today (first job) and I blindly said that I could start anytime and I totally forgot that I have "mandatory" graduation practices Friday and Monday and I have family things pretty much all of Tuesday. I'm not on the rotation for Monday or Tuesday yet, but I do have to be in 9-5 on Friday. I need to be out from 12:30 to 3pm Fri. and Mon., so is this a big mistake on my part and do I need to call right away or can I wait and stop by tomorrow or something?

You need to talk to the person in charge of the schedules as soon as possible He or she will need time to reschedule you. You should apologize and promise you will be more careful in the future.

As for how big of a mistake you made it depends on your boss. I have worked at places that will say tough, you will have to find your own replacement and if you do not you will be fired. So deal with it now, because the longer you wait the worse it will be.

the sooner you get this cleared up the better. you shouldn't have told him you could start and forgotten about your prior commitments. if you come to work on time and do the best you can learning how things are done, you should be alright. it's not a good impression on the boss, but hopefully not all that serious.

Call ASAP and own up to the mistake on your part. Bonus points if you know a coworker and can get them to cover you.
