First of all forget about the colour of the kilt. This should not come in to it at all for co-ordinating. Reason being if it is a Scottish wedding and the bridal party and perhaps some guests are in kilts then they should all be different. I know nowadays lots of wedding parties appear in the same tartan and if that's what they are happy with fine. However, the kilts should all be different as in the tartan of the clan they belong to. Most names do have a tartan of sorts but if not then the tartan of the individuals choice. Therefore choose bridesmaids dresses of a colour you really wish. Redish tartans in any case have numerous colours within it. Co-ordinate with anything else you choose but PLEASE do not involve the kilt, you would be missing the point of wearing the tartan completely. Wish your friend all the very best.

I am not sure if you will like this idea but i'll throw it out to you. What about long long blue dresses that match the blue in the kilt and have a deep red satin sash hang from the waistline? I think if the blue dresses had a light lawer of chiffon over satin and then the deep red sashes would be a very pretty effect. Hope this gives some inspiration...

If the kilt is a red background with blue , then go with the blue,or if blue background, go red. You want to pick up an accent colour. You don't want the bridesmaids to wear white- that's for the bride!! What colour are the flowers?

The most beautiful wedding I was ever in or to in this case was a deep emerald green, almost black with huge skirts over top of a slim cocktail dress, you could take the skirt part and wrap around like a cape later they were fantastic and of course the emerald green against a stark white was smashing, this would work well with the maroon or red kilt. Have a great time....

I had silver bridesmaids in short halternecks. Maybe Gold, copper or bronze would work. Definately NOT green!

If you can match the red of the groom, that would be good, but different shades of red may look a little silly.

Red can also restrict the flowers a little. Creams are nice with red.

A dark blue or silver dress or a cream dress with a dark blue sash would be pretty. I like flutterby's suggestion of tying the bouquets with ribbon to match the groom's kilt. Congrats.

I just discovered that target.com has bridesmaid dresses. Maybe instead of trying to plan a color first maybe you can search to see if you see a style you like - and maybe something in a good price range.

Look at Target.com they have dresses for well under $100. If you're not stuck on a specific color, you may be more open to what they have and can save a lot of money.

I would have them wear either dark red or blue to match the husband's kilt.
