Open hole flutes have the best resonance to their sound, but the choice should not be made based on orchestral or solo work. Closed hole flutes are used as "beginner" flutes while the player is learning all of the other mechanics; once that is accomplished the challenge of an open hole flute can be tried. The difference in sound resonance won't be noticible on a beginner flutist as they are still learning to proper emboucher to make a clear tone. Open hole flutes are more expensive, but if you feel fairly confident that the flutist will progress beyond the basics you may consider an open-hole flute with key plugs that can be removed later on.

Although the open holed flute will have a more resonant sound, you should be comfortable with it first. If you have difficulty covering the keys, your tone will suffer more greatly than when you use a closed hole flute. As a beginner, I would recommend a closed hole flute. It is mostly a personal preference, however. Try both and see which you like. Even some professional flutes have closed holes, so decide which sound you like better and which is more comfortable as some people prefer the sound of a closed hole flute. So, try both, and try different brands. Also consider and offset G key, as that makes open holes easier to cover because you don't have to stretch your ring finger to reach the key. Good luck!

Open hole is better. In addition you should be lokking for a flute with a solid siver head joint, body and foot. make sure it is a B foot and not a C foot. Also you might want to consider a gold lip plate which will darken the tone.

Open holed...because of the difference in the tone quality...but you should try playing both if you have not already and see which you are more comfortable with.
