New? With dealer cash-back, you might score a Hyundai Accent for under $14,000 (air con, manual locks, manual windows, AM/FM/CD).

Hyundai's reliability has gone up, ranking top 3 in many of J.D. Power's car categories and in Consumer Reports surveys. Yes, Honda and Toyota are better known for quality, reliability, and styling, but you won't find a model or equipment package for the price you want to pay. The Accent has 6 airbags and ABS at the price I mentioned.

Furthermore, the warranties of Hyundai are tops (drive train, rustproofing, roadside assistance). Ask about the AutoCash program --- you can get a $400 allowance usable in $40 units every 6 months (5 years total time) which will buy you oil changes (or anything else you want to spend on at the dealer) every 6 months for 5 years. Yes, Free Oil Changes.

Hyundai takes hits on Yahoo Autos and Edmunds.com for "true cost to own" but I don't think that dealer incentives and AutoCash is included in that price.

Surf Yahoo Autos and Edmunds.com if you want to research cars other than Hyundai. If quality and satisfaction are not issues, then the Chevy Aveo can be bought for about $10,000. Consumer Reports does not have good things to say about the Aveo, however.

Look for a 2-3 year old Camry with low miles! They've been at the top of Consumers Reports reliability lists for over 6 years! Happy hunting as they are not usually sold,,just passed on to family members. :-)=

If you want a good reliable car I would go with either Nissan or Toyota, not only are they greatly built, but they hold their value unlike any other vehicles. I had a Nissan Sentra for 5 years and loved it to death, great running car, great on gas. I drove it until it had 210,000 miles on it and then finally just now traded it in for a Toyota Tacoma, which I LOVE.

Used Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.

Look for the lowest mileage and most current year available.
