It is one small indication of the depth of spirituality of the Pope, and the extent to which He emulated Christ, who forgave His killers while they were in the act of killing Him.

JPII (we love you) ... Had "5" assasination attempts
May 13, 1981 John Paul II was shot and critically wounded by Mehmet Ali AÄca, a Turkish gunman, as he entered St. Peter's Square to address an audience. He was then rushed into the Vatican complex, then to the hospital. It was at this time en route to the hospital that he lost consciousness. AÄca was caught and sentenced to life imprisonment. Two days after Christmas 1983, John Paul II visited the prison where his would-be assassin was being held. The two spoke privately for 20 minutes. John Paul II said, "What we talked about will have to remain a secret between him and me. I spoke to him as a brother whom I have pardoned and who has my complete trust." The pope also stated that Our Lady of Fatima helped keep him alive throughout his ordeal.
“ Could I forget that the event [Ali AÄca's assassination attempt] in St. Peter’s Square took place on the day and at the hour when the first appearance of the Mother of Christ to the poor little peasants has been remembered for over sixty years at Fátima, Portugal? For in everything that happened to me on that very day, I felt that extraordinary motherly protection and care, which turned out to be stronger than the deadly bullet. "
------ -----
"Following the shooting, Pope John Paul II asked people to "pray for my brother (AÄca), whom I have sincerely forgiven." In 1983, he and AÄca met and spoke privately at the prison where AÄca was being held. The Pope was also in touch with AÄca's family over the years, meeting his mother in 1987 and his brother a decade later.
Although AÄca had been quoted as saying that "to me [the Pope] was the incarnation of all that is capitalism", and attempting to murder him, AÄca developed a friendship with the pontiff. In early February 2005, during the Pope's illness, AÄca sent a letter to the Pope wishing him well and also warning him that the world would end soon. When the Pope died on April 2, 2005, AÄca's brother Adnan gave an interview in which he said that Mehmet Ali and his entire family were grieving, and that the Pope had been a great friend to them. On April 5, 2005 CNN stated that AÄca would want to visit the Pope's funeral on April 8, 2005. However, Turkish authorities rejected his request to leave prison to attend."

I think the Pope set a good moralistic example for others to follow; rarley can one see such behavior.
He was walking the walk and not just talking the talk as most others do.
I have time and again that "to turn the other cheek" mans just that; do not slap back as the ripple continues, and this is the truth in our reality.
Bravo for him.
