I go barefoot all the time. I guess I'm protesting shoes and socks. But that's hardly political.

No, I'm always barefoot and I am spending a little time on here every day to try to correct people who believe it's against health department laws to go barefoot, but it's not a political protest or a protest of any kind.

Btw, the hookworm has been pretty much eradicated from the South since modern plumbing has replaced the outhouses, and never was a problem in colder climates. No reason to worry too much.

I would go barefoot, except I'd risk stepping on some really sharp stones on the road or sidewalk. Even with socked feet. Best to wear appropriate footwear in a protest.

No, why?
What good is going barefoot?
Are the media going to run out and say "Oh look! He's not wearing any shoes! He must be protesting!! Let's go get this scoop, guys!"
Or are people going to simply think you've escaped from a hospital and couldn't find shoes to fit?

If you're going to make a protest, do something that will:
A) be a bit more obvious/noticeable
B) have some sort of connection to the protest itself
and C) preferably not expose you to all the filth on streets and sidewalks (not to mention the risk of hepatitus and tetanus)

I enjoy going barefoot in summer. However, I don't understand what that would protest.

As a protest of what? I don't think so.
