Any breed of dog can be good around cats but it depends on the dogs upbringing and training. If you are just starting out and are kind of leary about getting a dog because you don't want your cats to be harmed you should probably stick with a medium sized dog to a small sized dog. When you do bring home a dog you'll need to introduce them slowly to eachother and don't leave them alone until you are absolutely positive that they will be fine together. Good Luck

You want to stay away from terriers and all breeds of dogs with a prey instinct - no dogs who hunt or chase game, no herding dogs. Other than that, it's an individual dog thing and how they're raised. It also makes a difference how your cats act. I had a cat for a lot of years with a house full of afghan hounds and they were great friends, but this was a cat who didn't run from the dogs. If he had, they would have chased him and it would have been a different story. Get a puppy and if raised with your cats, they'll learn to at least co-exist, if not be friends.

My mom has a 14-year old cat that has lived with 4 different breeds of dog. He was raised with a lab/setter mix, whom he loved dearly. When the lab passed away, my mom got a husky/shepard mix puppy and again, they became great friends. My mom lives with her sister, and she has a little beagle-mutt who doesn’t seem to care for the cat at all. He tries to play with her sometimes but she just growls at him. My mom and this cat also lived with me briefly, when I had my lab/pit bull cross. My dog NEVER tried to hurt him, but I think his energy was a bit too much for the poor cat, so he pretty much steered clear of him for the most part.
That said, try to stay away from breeds that have a reputation for being more energetic or high-strung, such as boxers, purebred huskies, terriers (including pits), and many toy-breeds. But no matter what breed you choose, each individual dog does have its own unique personality, so it’s important to introduce them properly and try not to force anything. If you are considering a puppy, it may be easier since it will grow up with the cats. If you are considering adopting an adult dog, then look for one that is a little older (and therefore calmer), and has preferably lived with a cat before.

Any dog can be goood with cats if you train them right. I held my cat and my dog and let them siff each other if the cat hissed or the dog barked i would scold them, today they are best friends. I would though (just to be safe) avoid terriers (i love them to death though) and maybe very big breeds like a great dane. Just so that the cat doesnt get squished and terriers are very dominating dogs and i dont think the cats would appericiate that! I would try a dog easy going like a go with the flow dog like a Golden Retriever, or something like that. Do your research and dont impulse buy all puppies are cute!

Try getting a breed not known to dominate most of the time. (Check out dogbreeds.com ) and get a young dog or puppy, as they will adjust to the situation better than an adult. If you get one from a breeder, try for one with cats in the household!

Golden Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels. I've had both. Currently, I have a Cocker with a cat that I adopted after I've had my dog for almost 10 years. He doesn't really bother with the cat unless the cat annoys him. Then he growls at her and walks away.

Any breed of dog can be good around cats if they are raised with them. Otherwise I always had luck with herder dogs - pulis and collies with my cats.

it just depends on how you raise the dog or how it was raised by a previous owner, most dogs that are introduced to cats at a young age will usually be okay with other cats.

Beagles. they're super with childrens and cats. they're the sweetest canines in the worldwide, nevertheless particularly circumstances somewhat obdurate yet to not a fault. somewhat, their uncomplicated stubborness turns into somewhat endearing precise off the bat. they're good on your non-backyard having subject with the aid of fact they're infamous for procuring out of fenced-in yards. they're p.c.. animals and love being around human beings/animals. i've got have been given a 4-twelve months old blind beagle, have never had any problems with him, and he's palms down the perfect dogs of all-time. to not point out we've an 8-month old male kitten who has right away grow to be the dogs's perfect pal(i think of the kitten thinks he himself is a beagle). Beagles fairly are the perfect puppy you are able to desire to ever have(nevertheless i assume i'm somewhat bias).

My English Bulldog is great with my fiancee's cat. Most (not all) dogs are naturally curious animals. You really have to be more concerned with whether your cats will be allright with your dog. Our cat provokes the dog constantly.
