They are EXTREMELY dangerous. But they are EXTREMELY obedient, and loyal as well. It IS a fact that when they bite, it does more damage than a certain amount of dog breeds. But they really aren't natural people killers. The problem with Pitbulls, is that genetics with them matter more than they do with most dogs. If you train your dog well AND have a dog with a good bloodline, and good genetics, then you should be completely fine.
However, if you don't train it well, but it has good genetics, it could turn out to be a dangerous dog. And vice versa. If you have bad genetics, but good training, it could go around seeming like a great dog, but it could possibly snap with little provocation.
And I DO NOT want all these Pitbull lovers to go and attack me, just because I'm speaking the truth. I love Pitbulls too and I do think they get a bad rep. BUt the truth is, the only way you can be completely certain and safe with a Pitbull, is get good genetics, meaning buy from a reputable breeder, see if its parents have good temperament, and when you bring it home, make sure you start taking it to somewhere to help train it.
And always, always, ALWAYS supervise it with a child, or other dogs. No matter how good of training, and no matter how much training your dog has, it will always have a breaking point. A Pitbull will not back down if attacked by another dog, and it will always be considered the bad guy if something happens. Same thing with children, if a Pitbull attacks a child, your dog is the bad guy, even if the child was sitting on it, and pulling its tail, and pulling its ears. So just remember... if/when you get a Pitbull... watch out.
Oh, and I can give a statistic for all you Pitbull haters. How many people are killed by Pitbulls a year? 3.
How many children are killed by their own parents? 3 a day.

WHAT!!! I have a pitbull puppy and had friends who had pitbulls! Its all in the way you train them. You can make a yorkie dangerous. The most important thing is to socialize pitbulls, take him to lowes or places that allow dogs. I have a 8 week old puppy he loves everyone and will lick you to death. The only ones that are dangerous are the ones not socialized.Dont let other people say change your mind. Oh another thing thank the media for making people think this is a bad breed!

Pitbulls can be VERY nice. My uncle had the biggest lap dog I've ever seen. And yes, the way they are raised has something to do with their personality and tenancy to attack. It you take charge early in life and mabye get some professional dog training, your pit bull may come out well.
But still, Pitbulls were bred to fight and be aggressive. This has not been completely bred out of them. They are a very strong breed, even for their size. This is a dog that is good only for people who know how to take charge.
And if there are children present this would be a BAD idea, no matter how sweet a pit might seem. You wouldn't want to take a chance.
So it depends. If you can take charge and don't have any children present, go ahead. But if you even doubt if you can be dominate over this dog for a second, this is not a good breed for you.

If you do decide to get a pit bull make sure it is socialized and trained. They are sweet loyal loving family dogs (just like any other breed) if raised that way, They can be VERY aggressive in the wrong hands. Some will never like other animals so you have to watch for that. They are strong and energetic, needs ALOT of exercise.
I have a (shelter) pit bull she is the greatest but I still keep an eye on her around children and animals even though she has never acted aggressive towards anyone. I feel like it's my responsibility as a DOG owner. Because of their reputation you should always have on leash (sometime muzzled), expect some people to frown on you just because you have one.
Do some reading and research before deciding if this is the right type dog for you.

Here's the thing. Pitbulls are some of the nicest dogs I have ever worked with. If they are socialized right they wouldn't hurt a fly. They get a bad wrap because some of the people who buy them either don't know what they are doing or they want a fierce dog. Just make sure to get one as a puppy. Then make sure to enroll him in a puppy socialization class. Also take him on walks and have different people pet him and feed him treats. Try to get as many people of differing shapes, sizes, and colors as possible to help out. In the end you will have a dog that wouldn't hurt anyone.

Who told- Pitbulls are dangerous? Although there are so many news about its ferociuosness, this may be due to its type of rearing.
Pit bull is not only the dog that attacks more young children or adults than any other breed. Most of the pit bulls have been picked up and used against owners because most of the owners inject the steroids to them.
Since so many stories are out bursting daily about pit bulls, your neighbors and even your own family members would abhor your choice. So you should make up your mind to conflict their opinion. In extreme cases, some of the neighbors try to kill your pup also, so train your dog to refuse the food offered by the strangers.
Pit bulls can also be trained like that of other breeds of dog. Training should be provided to your pit bull puppy once it arrives your home. You should prepare yourself to spend at least 5 to 20 minutes daily with your dog. If not, you should reconsider your decision about pit bull rearing.

Pit bulls are only dangerous if you give them the opportunity to be. This applies to not only taking on responsible ownership but also, as many have pointed out, to being aware of the genetic tendencies of the "pit bull" type breeds and taking PROACTIVE measures to ensure the safety of your dog as well as other pets and people. This includes, but is not limited to: supervison around children, avoiding dog parks and other unsafe off-leash situations, enrolling the dog in obedience class for training and socialiazation, actively fighting BSL and other unjust rules and regulations, keeping up with current research, and educating yourself and others about pit bulls. Everything about owning a pit bull is over-the-top. As a pit bull owner, you are going to be subject to alot more scrutiny than the average dog owner, as is your dog. So you must be there for him 100%. Owning pit bulls is not for the faint of heart.
I would recommend doing thorough research before you decide to adopt (hopefully) a pit bull (or any of the breeds that fall under this umbrella term). You are already taking a step in the right direction by talking to other pit bull owners. Visit some reputable websites (see below) and educate yourself first. You will then be in a much better position decide if owning a pit bull is something you can commit to, and will also be better able to select a pit bull that is right for you.
I would also recommend viewing the Pit Bull Owner's Code of Conduct (http://www.happypitbull.com/ownertopics/code.htm). If you can't commit to EVERYTHING on the list, DON'T get a pit bull!
Best of luck, and I promise that if a pit bull is indeed the breed for you, you'll have no other. They are loving, loyal, sweet, and sensitive, and deserve to be treated and viewed with the same respect awarded other dogs.

You are right, they are nice, if they have been raised in a nice environment. While Pit Bulls can have an aggressive tendency, they will not just attack you for no reason. If you want one get a puppy, from a knowledgeable breeder. I wouldn't recommend picking one up from a shelter unless you are into rehabilitating animals. I would not trust a grown pit bull with an unknown background around children. Pit bulls have a bad reputation because many people train them to be attack, or guard dogs, and even fight them. Hope this helps.

When I was growing up, we had a male pomeranian that was mean and would bite anyone except my Mom. We had gotten him from an elderly lady whose grandkids would tease and pick on the dog. So, it just goes to show you that it's all in how they are treated and trained as how the dog will behave. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with pitbulls--like everyone else has said here, it's how they are trained and treated.

I have said this all before and will post it again.
What dog has been referred to as a "Nanny Dog"? The Pit Bull.
Do any of the Pit haters know what the most popular family dog was in the '20s and '30s? It was the Pit Bull. Do you remember the "Our Gang" movies, Little Rascals? Petey was a Pit Bull. Buster Brown shoes, "My dog Tige", yes, another Pit Bull.
STUBBY, Bull Terrier mix, WWI. The most decorated war dog in U.S. history
I guess all of these people that are against Pit Bulls have it a bit wrong.
Doesn't sound like a bad dog to me.
