I was just thinking about when I was a kid, things like Sunday school and vacation bible school, I remember being taught to be an automaton, to believe everything the nice instructor said.

I remember the songs, the readings, everything was designed to be some sort of Orwellian/BF skinner nightmare. "Jesus loves me yes I know, cause the BIBLE TELLS ME SO."

just thinking about it really creeps me out, does anyone else have these memories and such an adverse reaction to it?

YES!!! I hated that crap.

It reminded me of the horror movies where the people sit in a room with their eyes pried opened while they watch some brainwashing video with some kind of audio track.

Like clockwork orange where they were "programming" Alex to be non-violent and they inadvertently programmed him to get sick every time he heard beethoven.

I'm glad i was resistant to the brainwashing techniques.

As a small child, I loved Sunday School and Bible stories. It was as I grew and went to other churches that I saw the differences and the growth of control. I was always rebellious and a thinker, and when my questions were not answered intelligently and I was told to believe or go to hell, I moved on. Those weren't happy times. I am much more happier now.

When I was a kid I was told to go to church on Sunday. It was a Methodist church down the road when I lived in Tuscon, Arizona. They tried everything to get me to believe, including pier pressure. I still withheld. It wasn't until years later that I was confronte with death by my own hand that I put my trust in God. I'm glad that I did it. That was 20 years ago. I have been Christian ever since.

i'm particular it somewhat is a risk. And as for there not being this way of element as an ex-Christian, it somewhat is a lie. with the aid of fact i'm one. and that i say that with the aid of fact i used to be very plenty a believer and follower of Christianity (for the time of the Roman Catholic church), yet around the time of my confirmation, I had to come returned up with questions and attempt to confirm solutions. Upon scouring the information superhighway for questions, and not getting solutions from all of us in the church who could desire to comprehend the solutions, i began out finding for my own. by potential of the time i became into in part by college (almost 3-5 yrs later), I had reached a element the place i could not reconcile my ideals with those of a Christian, at which element I went my own course. I now not have faith Jesus is a "savior" or "son of God" or that God is the being portrayed in the Bible/Koran. So I even have become a non secular individual with a concept in an unknowable and ambiguous deity-variety know-the way it fairly is interior us all. I haven't any hatred in the direction of Christians (the non-fundy ones I propose), as they did not persecute me or any nonsense like that. by potential of that definition, i'm an ex-Christian. and that i will have faith that, whilst i've got not seen it in my opinion, there ARE ex-Atheists obtainable...basically like there are ex-different religions to boot.

Yeah it's pretty creepy... although what I mostly feel about it now is proud that I could see through it all at such a young age. I hope my kids turn out to be critical thinkers too.

Yes of course I remember that, But asking a question like this only adds fuel to Christian fires. They will think that we have had "bad experiences" at church and now we hold some kind of grudge against the church because of what we have been through.

Ah yes, plenty of memories from the Presbyterian Gulag...I can still remember the way the place smelled and how damn uncomfortable the pews were...I just wanted to get up, rip my shirt off, smear animal blood on me and see what the parishioners thought. <)

I have the same memories. It is funny how some people act as if they would choke to death if they took a bite of food without first praying (saying grace, blessing the food, whatever you call it).

What you're describing certainly is a part of the control of churches and how early the programming starts.

I remember my finger tips being hit with a ruler by a nun. It didn't happen alot or anything, but what a way to teach God's love.
