i was wondering where the tradition of wearing gowns came from especially the cardboard hat i was thinking it had to do with a type of greek tradition, being the capital of knowledge (correct me if im wrong) but any help would be great

No it goes back to the everyday costume of students and faculty at medieval universities. Now it is just preserved for ceremonial occasions.
