You don't mention what location you are in. If you search online with the phrase "pick up used refrigerator", many places come up. Maybe one is close to you.
Often places that SELL used appliances will pick them up for you for free. Try your phone book for that.
Also, if you are buying a NEW one, the person who delivers it may pick up your old one, either free or for a small tip.

Look into a local free paper. The Greensheet comes to mind. There are usually persons that will take old appliances off your hands. They in turn scrap the unit and sell it off piece by piece.

Take it to a goodwill store. They will give you a certificate in the amount of worth. You can use that as a tax deduction at the end of the year. Save you money.

If you lived in my neighborhood, all you would have to do is stick it out next to the road and some redneck would come by and pick it up. Actually, they would probably be fighting over it.
The next day it would be on their front porch with three more just like it.

If you put it on the streets and put a sign that says "FREE" on it, someone will DEFINETLY pick it up. GUARANTEED. It took less than 4 hours to have ours taken from our front yard.
