I know I shouldn't be throwing stones. I'm guilty of the same. But really isn't it really counter productive? Look at their responses to our challanges. Look at the outright attacks that are in their questions. I've not seen an honest question about our faith from one of them yet.

believers - please note the attack nature of every answer from the "enlightened" ones to this question. This is what I'm talking about.

I like debate. This forum however is seldom debate rather its pot shots at each other from both sides.

Debate has rules and usually attacking your opponents intelligence is not considered good debate.

I'd say the same about today's burst of utterly baseless criticism of evolution. Clearly, today, there are more sellers than buyers.

Because of pride.
Proverb13:10
Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom

We should stop giving pearls to swine.

Someone who truly does not believe in God is a fool

That is not an insult, it is a description
Pr 14:1
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

And you can't reason with a fool
Pr 17:10
A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool
Pr23:9
Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Pr26:5
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit

And so on.....

Better to leave it alone, though its hard sometimes not to be apologetic

"Don't have anything to do with foolish arguments, for the Lord's servant must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful." I think that we can learn a lesson from St Paul's letter to Timothy. There is no point in bashing our heads against walls arguing with people who are not even listening to the message. The disciples who were sent out in pairs by Jesus were instructed not to waste their time in this way. However, Christians can set an example on this page by their courtesy and kindness. In another context I'd be tempted to say we are not here to score points off people!

We are not. We continue to put out the Word of God to whomever in hope that someone will believe. We don't know why someone is an atheist, but I know why I am a Christian, and it is this answer that I give.

Sometime an atheist just need to know that someone loves them regardless of what we might say is a stupid question.

Remember: At one point we have not always believed.

The tradition of debate is a wonderful one. In dialog, people of opposing views have, throughout history, forged new thought and come upon fresh ways of looking at things.

Those that oppose debate assume that they are finally, inarguably correct in their thoughts, and these are dangerous people.

Atheists, and let's not forget agnostics, Buddhists, Cabalists and Hermetics offer questions that, if you could answer them without simply parroting your book, might lead you to a deeper and more firm faith.

I have no complaint against Christians who are open to debate. One of the greatest of all Christian writers was C.S.Lewis, and he loved the rough and tumble of disagreement.

Those that fear debate are basically sheep.

Your instant thumbs down of my answer reveals that you are a coward.

Because it's an open forum. Because some of us have nothing better to do. Because some of us idealistically hope that what we say will plant seeds in the other's mind about our faith. Because once in a while, in the barrage of questions, there's one or two that are ACTUALLY sincere.

Whether it is counter-productive or no in terms of outcome, personally, I find it interesting because it prepares me for such questions should they be brought to me in my daily life.

Don't worry about them. What they believe is up to them and the consequences of their beliefs will visit them, same with us.

We shouldn't be arguing with them unless they start to deny God. Remember Paul and the Jews? Acts 19:8-10. He was talking with them and persuading them to try and see that Jesus is the Son of God.

Let them be immature, that shouldn't bring you down with them. Some Athiests here produce very interesting conversation, then there are those that want to be ridiculous. Ignore them, but don't be afraid to look at different view points, they can be inspiring.

Jesus did say not to cast pearls before swine.
However, if the Bible can be compared to a sword, this is a fine opportunity to sharpen it.

Something is wrong when you cannot have a debate on your beliefs. Are you only here to hear your side?
