I was talking to some people I know who are hardcore fundamentalist Christians, the started quoting scripture and I quoted right back, they seemed so surprised. I said "I have read the entire bible quite a few times haven't you?", the said no and seemed a bit disturbed.

(and yes I was a baptized Christian up until the age of 18, I have been taught and understand the Bible)

Because they think that if we don't believe in God, we must not have read the Bible because, of course, if we have read the Bible, we would KNOW that he exists. Who else could make a burning bush talk, make two of every animal species get on a boat with a random old man, and turn food into alcoholic beverages?

I don't personally find that shocking, and I'm a Christian. I've read lots of literature that supports and downs religion. In most cases, the atheists I know understand the Bible better than so called Christians.

Hardcore fundamentalist in my opinion make most Christians look bad anyway. Some claim all this stuff and can't really back it up. Some say hateful things even when the Bible says to love everybody. Some blow up abortion clinics, yet think that Islamic Jihadists are hateful.

Not at all. In fact, I saw a study that showed that most people are not surprised by that, either. In order to not believe in something, it's only logical to know what it is first, right? Also, I get the feeling that most Christians are only Christians because their parents--and most of the people around them--are Christians (in the U.S., anyway). If they had been born in, say, Thailand, they would probably be Buddhists. I think that it's very possible that if more Christians really read the whole Bible and thought about it, there would be less Christians. Philip met the ethopian that was reading Prophecy, & Philip said do you understand what thou readth, he say how can I understand unless someone teach me, Then Philip Started teaching about Jesus Christ & then the ethopian say what does hinder me from being Baptized. So friend, It does not matter if you read the whole bible through 100 times, do you UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU READETH, I rather read one chapter for a year & understand then the whole bible & don't understand, You seem to think being baptize is what saves you, It does not without repentence, I was baptized after I repented in May 1970 in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I did not get baptized to save me but for me to follow the word. Many goes down a dry sinner & come up a wet sinner. Therefore If you have been baptized 100 times & have not repented, You are still lost.

Most Christians specially younger ones have only attended their Catechetical Classes which are only excerpts from major events in the New Testament and few from the Old Testaments only to support what is said in the New. Many of them grew older and just listened to the services or sermons but not everybody have been through the Bible the way some Atheists do.

If you understood the Bible, I would be surprised. But I would not be surprised if an Atheist had read the Bible.

If you understand the Bible, then you are the first person who admitted being an Atheist, who understood it. I think that you think you understand it but if you are still an Atheist, then you are either turning your back on it, or you are in denial about something.

I'll bet that you don't really understand it. But I can be wrong. I will check your profile to see what you claim to know.

I think the real issue is "fundamentalist". Fundamentalist anything tends to mean closed minds, and minds are like parachutes, they work best when opened. As an example I would suggest that you look at the conflicts going on in the world now, and fundamentalism frequently is at the core of the problem.
So please don't include all Christians in that group. I am a Quaker (the Society of Friends) and we see the light of God in all people. Even Atheists. And we accept all people as equals and as they are. The bottom line is that what other people think about you is not as important as what you think about you is.

I guess the point is, if you don't believe in God then why would you bother reading the Bible? You obviously don't understand the Bible very well if you are now an atheist.

I'll pray for you whether you want it or not.

I am a Christian. . .and despite your belief I am not shocked that you have read the Bible. Are you shocked that I have read Darwin's theories? Are you shocked that I studied evolution? Are you shocked that my bachelors degree holds a degree in science! Shocking, isn't it. . .no, not really. Everyone searches for truth to some extent. The difference in you reading the Bible and me reading the Bible, is I read it to gain knowledge and through the Holy Spirit I do.

reading something vs understanding/believing it are 2 different things....

you were a false convert, if you are atheist now.

the bible is not about reading words and remembering and understanding facts...the content is spiritual.. unless you have a renewed spirit,....the message goes right past you...and you don't get it.. the real understanding is spiritual, not mental

maybe someday you will read it once again and actually experience the spirtual message that is there.
