I have been overweight for over 10 years. But 10 weeks ago I joined Weight Watchers. I am 5ft 4 and weighed in at 13 stone. I have been following their core diet. You can eat lean meats, fish, veg, salad, fruit, pasta, brown rice, non sugary cereals, low fat yogurt. You can eat sweet things, bread etc, anything you wish but have to allow for these foods. You are allowed 21 points over the week. This is my eleventh week on the diet and I have lost over 2 stone. I have dropped two dress sizes, from a size 16 to a size 12. I have also joined a gym. I have felt brilliant. You go once a week to get weighed and stay for a talk. Talking to other people in your position makes you feel so much more positive. I have not felt hungry since I have been on this diet. If I am hungry in between meals I snack on fruit. It is hard at first but as the weeks go by it becomes so much more easier to be disciplined. Give it a go. If I can do it anyone can. Good Luck. Your feel so much better.

I recently wrote an article on my blog about being able to stick to new lifestyle changes. In it I mention a scientific study that produced some interesting results (a little boring so I have shortened it). Any way briefly it describes that you first have to work out what stage you are at. For example if you are at a thinking stage ie considering doing a diet, then actually doing a diet will be very difficult to do. You will need to move from the thinking stage to the action stage before you can even contemplate taking on a diet.
I have included a link to it below, I hope it helps. Good luck

Don't try to do everything at once. I don't know anyone who can eat more fruits and veggies and drink more water and eat less fast food and drink less soda and workout every day ALL at the same time. Pick one small thing about your diet and make it healthier. Focus on only that one thing until its easy, and then focus on another thing. Its slow, but its easier, and its the only way I have been able to steadily lose weight for 6 months. If you drink regular soda, just concentrate on switching to diet. Dont worry about the other stuff until that is easy. Disciplining yourself is a lot easier when the task is small!
Don't expect to be perfect, know it takes time, and you will see results!

Tis a hard one to overcome, especially if your body thinks you're hungry. Try setting yourself goals and have non-food-related rewards, like an evening out dancing, or a good DVD.

A good trick to supplement the existing ideas people have mentioned, is to drink a pint of water before every meal to fill up a bit first; or if you feel like nibbling between meals, drink instead, as this is often why people feel hungry. People in the Western world are gradually losing the thirst reflex apparently, so it's important to make sure you are drinking enough too.

Good luck!

The best way to lose weight without putting it straight back on is to count every calorie. The allowance for women is 2000 and for men 2500 per day - so just stay below that. Stop the obvious things like sugar in tea and coffee, full fat coke and cut your portions in half. Also, drink a pint of water when you get hungary as thirst is often mistaken for hungar. Treat yourself at the weekend but don't go mad. I bet you lose half a stone in about two weeks.

DO NOT DIET!! It doesn't work. What you need is a lifestyle change. But most of all eat what you want but in moderation. Think little portions and have several of them through out the day. Switch to low-fat and use olive oil instead of butter.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Join your local weight watchers, they tell you what to eat and they check on you, so it's not easy to fall off the wagon so to say. It will halp you re-educate yourself regarding what you eat. The food choice is great, have a go!

You could try NutriSystem since they send you food that is already made and portioned. There is a promo for $100 cash rebate on http://www.diet.com/ for that plan right now. Having the portions already set might help you!
