I need to pick a career soon. I am stuck between a doctor, and veterinarian, or a teacher. You may think these are pretty generic, but their work has always appealed to me. I took a career test through my school, and it was no help. Are there any good books or websites out there that can help me out?

Write down the pros and cons of each job. Consider hours and pay. You might want to call some doctors, vets and schools and see if you can job shadow for a day in each field. After seeing the person do the job for a whole day it might give you some perspective. Also, when you job shadow, ask the person some questions. Like, why did they choose this field? If they had it to do over again, would they do something different? What kind of person does best in this field? What does he/she think is the best thing about the job? The worst thing? Your library should have a section on careers that might help.

Just do some research on the various careers. It also will depend on how long you want to be in school for. If you want to be a doctor, you'll be there a while. Whereas if you want to be a teacher, that's a four year degree in most places. It's all up to what appeals to you the most. I would talk to an advisor at your local college to see what would be best for you.

If you love animals, go for veterinarian job. If you love small kids, go for teaching. If you don't mind the hard work, long hours, the social pressures (where ever you go, people want to consult you or tell you all about their problems and of course won't dream of paying you), and the paper work and restrictions of the insurance firms esp. if you are in USA, go for a doctor's job. You can also think of becoming a holistic healer, a naturopath, a homeopath etc. if you want to work outside the main stream medical system.
