I've been struggling with my weight since I was 12. I am now 22, 5'6 and 165 lbs. I have tried all diets, I have been working out and have been a vegetarian for 3 years now. I just can't seem to lose any weight? What else should I be doing? I work out everyday, atleast 30 mins of cardio or 30 mins of strength. Why can I not lose any more weight, this is seriously frustrating, especially since I've been doing it the way any doctor would tell me, eating right and exercising.

Well, chances are you are eating too much.

Weight loss is a function of calories consumed vs. calories used by the body. If your body takes in more calories than it uses, then you will gain fat.

However, what I think you should do is go have your body fat percentage measured. Weight is only one measure, and doesn't mean everything.

If you are overweight (and based only on the info you gave us it appears that you are a bit overweight), then you need to increase the calorie burning your body does and/or decrease the amount of calorie intake.

Examine your diet - what sort of snacking are you doing (honestly)? And include all the little "I'll just have one...." and little bites here and bites there.....

If you have maintained your 165 for a while, then try this - increase your cardio to 45 minutes, and remove about 100 calories per day from your diet. If you aren't aware of roughly the number of calories you are consuming each day, then you need to do an assessment of that. Start reading the backs of the packages of food you are consuming and start using measuring cups. It's not such a big deal once you get into it.

I think you need to try Pilates. It is most effective in losing weight. Winsor Pilates is the best. I was like you and I just could not lose weight no matter how many cardio workouts and weight training I did but I lost it easily with Pilates. You could just try it and see if you like it and if you feel lighter using it. It only costed me 10 bucks and I think if you go on their website, you can still get that deal. Try to do more exercise that elongates and stretches your body rather than bulks it up which is what pilates does. plus, always drink a lot of water even when you are not working out. It helps to get rid of the fats a lot faster. Also, be careful about starving yourself, because that doesn't do any good for your weight. I think some meats are really good for your body too like poultry and fish. Swimming is also good for elongation and it should help take off the pounds. You want to try to take it slow a pound a week because it is really too difficult to get rid of it all at once. It is not good for your body anyway. Your body will think you are starving. You need to work up to a point doing elongating exercises because seriously doing an hour of exercise a day makes me think you need a different exercise.

Well, the workouts sound GREAT! I wish I was dedicated enough to workout for an hour every day... 45 minutes 4 times a week is the most consistant I seem to manage.

I would look at your diet. There are 2 major things I would be say are the culprits... you are eating too much or too little -or- you may have a thyroid condition. Vegetarian diets can be a little tricky - I would keep a food journal to determine how many calories you are eating in an average week. If it is too low, you may be in starvation mode and need to eat more (counter-intuitive, but that's how I broke out of my last plateau). If it is too many, you may be overeating even on a vegetarian diet.

If neither is going on, then head to your doctor for some tests. He/She will make you do a food journal anyways, so with one already done, you can skip this step. You can do one online, or even just pen and paper.

You're a vegetarian, but are you sure you're eating healthy? Eating lots of fresh produce and getting enough protein? Little or no junk food? Look for improvements you can make (less coke, or less chips, more water, whatever it is).

Strength training: its best to have at least 48 hours between sessions. Its very important to let your muscles rest because that resting period is when they actually get stronger.

If you have cut your calories too severely, that could be why you cant lose weight. If you deprive your body, it stores everything you do eat as fat to prepare for a shortage later.

If none of these sounds like you, if your diet is in check, you're getting enough food, etc etc, then talk to your doc and ask him to test you for conditions that may be making it difficult for you. Also, some medications can cause weight gain, if you are on any ask your doc about them too.

Ruling out any medical condition. I find the culprit is usually your diet. People usually starve themselves and slow their metabolism down to the point were they are not burning any calories or they eat too much especially late at night. If your not doing this already, eat a good brakfast, like oatmeal or cereal and then a light snack 2 or 3 hour later and than lunch and then a light snack 2 or 3 hours later and then a light nutritious dinner. Don't eat after 7:00. This will speed up your metabolism and you should start losing weight.

You seem to be doing everything right, but just being a vegetarian isn't always enough, cut snacks too. Also you may want to look to higher a personal trainer, just to get a program going, normally they can set you up with something with 3 or 4 appointments. They'll only cost around 500 max, if it's more get a membership at the Y and go talk to there personal trainers.

I know how frustrating it can be, I have come to the cruel realizations that I will never have a six pack, even when I was 174 lbs at the end of basic I still had a belly.

Have you been checked out for a medical issue? If you are healthy, then you must be doing something wrong. I don't know what you are eating, but I also have a tough time losing weight. I have recently lost 37 lbs in 4.5 months following the south beach eating plan. I only exercise in small amounts and that is why my weight loss is slower than normal, but it does work for me. Get the book and read it so you understand what foods are good for you and vice versa. You have to read in order to understand how and what foods affect your body and digestion.

If you try to make a diet your metabolism slows down to keep your current weight or state. Eating right is a good point. The only way to loose your weight healthy is that loose more calories than you get. It is simple but true. One hint is that there are some breaking points for loosing your weight. Until that breaking point you will loose your weight more effectively than below that barrier.
I was 91 kilograms and my breaking point is 79 kilograms. I can easily drop down to 79 kilograms but I can not loose anymore. So my breaking point which is determined by my basal metabolism or my body is 79 kilograms. If I broke that point there will be another breaking point which is set by my metabolic system...

OK...First of all your biggest problem is your DIET...your actually not overweight, maybe like 5 lbs but that's easy to lose. You need to eat better forms of protein. Being a vegetarian makes training and shredding up the body hard. You need to start consuming smaller meals 6 times a day...and you need chicken, or pork, or fish, even eggs you need these...or you need to learn what beans and tofu's have higher protein counts...but none of them will amount to the benefits of meat, and you also need to drink protein shakes. Start looking into your diet more seriously and you will see results.
