I feel sorry for my grandad, he always talks about winning the lotto, and how he would do this and that for his daughters. he has a drinking problem also, and today he broaght my mum some fruits which i find sweet.

He said to me the reason why he drinks (not going to say), but then he broke down and left. my grandad has 4 daughters 1 is in dominica, and one is my mum.

Ive noticed my mum doesnt see him much, and he lives locally, i was wondering if i could do anything for him?

I only want serious answers please, I really do feel sorry for him

Since he confided in you about his reason for drinking this more than likely means that he trust you and maybe it's also his way of reaching out for help. Look up some AA groups and encourage him to go. Caring for him and being supportive will be doing quite a bit for him.

Also, visiting your grandfather more often will show to him that he is loved and maybe this will make him feel like he has another chance, which may encourage him to finally make things right with himself and eventually family.

Unfortunately, our society doesnt really have a place for our elder citizens like your granddad and they fellout of place and no longer wanted. He wont last forever so the best thing you can do is spend whatever time you can with him, to make him feel wanted by the youth of today. If your granddad is like mine was,I learned alot of valuable information from himthat Im still using some 34 yars after he passed on,information that cannot ever be duplicated and will be passed on to my grandson. My grandfathers best times in his last years were the times him and I spent together before I went to Viet Nam and to me left a lifetime of memories and I miss him so much. So life is short but spend the time with him and you will be so rewarded from it and then pass what you will learn onto your grandkids. Good luck and enjoy

I'm so sorry for you, you sound like a very strong and intelligent young lady . You stay strong and take care of yourself and do not try to take on your Grandad problems because they are his, if he has a Gambling and Drinking problems he needs some Professional and there are lots of Places that will help him if he wants the Help, but sweetie you cant Help him. I know you Love Him, but he needs help you cant give him. So my best advice to you and your mum is for you and your mum to stay strong and take care of each other so when your Granddad needs your help you will be able to help him, God Bless Yoy All, and Take Care of Yourself.

Just popping in to see him will probably be a nice surprise for him. Just maybe go to see him and have lunch with him and maybe go for walks. It is a shame your mum does not want to spend some time with him. Ask him if you can fetch his shopping for him when he needs things and also, make sure he has enough blankets when it is cold etc, small things like this make a big difference to some people. How sweet you are. x

I am married, but have always been close to my mom, while my bro and sisters (bad people) stayed away and got one with their selfish lives. I think you can spend more time doing fun things with your grabndad, but let himn know also that your time is precuious and you may want to do other things as well that don't involve him. Just be kind, and be there for him when you can. Good luck, and hope the lottery does come off!!

The best you can do for him at this point is to be with him. It seems that he likes and trusts you. I always lived farway from my grandparents. I miss this part of life, the part I could have had with them, the time I could have spent to know them better. This is the most importante thing we can do in life. Get to know our beloved ones and love them. I don;t know you grandpa but AA might be a good idea and you can get through this with him. remember that the attachment you have to your grandpa probably make you sick too. I mean, he is not the only one who suffers from his addiction, you are suffering too and need help as well. Don't give up! Take care of him and yourself.

do you not think it worth while to ask your mum why she won t spend time with him?it could be something alot deeper than his bad drinking habits.i understand how you feel the need to make things up to him but be careful.listening to him like you already have done is probably the best way of helping him,.hope all goes well

I'm sure that spending time with him, doing things with him like going for walks and that would be nice.

But be careful, he's a drinker. You may wish to overcompensate for your mother not wishing to see him - don't let him take advantage of this, and try to guilt you into doing something you don't want to do. He drinks because he's unhappy about something, do not let him manipulate you. Be very kind, yes, but also very firm, and don't let him bully you.
