A miniature poodle would be best and not a toy. They are more sturdy, they do not shed, very smart, and have a deep bark (males mostly) so if someone tries to break in they really won't know what type of dog and may have second thoughts. Males are best in this size of poodle because they are not as aggressive and possesive as the females. Females are better in the Standard size.
The only draw back on a poodle is the grooming. I groom my own so if you get yourself some good Oster brand clippers and a pair of sheers you can actually do it yourself just by following what your groomer did. If you have the time, about every two weeks they will need their nails clipped and their coats trimmed. If you get a light colored one he will have eye stains and you will need to clean them every week with a damp cloth or eye stain remover (pet stores carry it). I like my poodle clipped in the modified saddle cut. He looks like he has a bolero jacket and pants with the crew cut style top and long ears, powder puff tail and face -feet- torso-crotch-all trimmed very close to the skin. Makes it easier to groom and a lot quicker to wash. Our Valentino thinks he is human and ever puts his toys in his box and if I wash his bed, as soon as I pull it out of the dryer, I hand it to him and takes it back to living room next to the desk. Took me one day to teach him sit, stay, heal, wait, and dance. He weighs 15lbs and that is all he will ever weigh. Hope you find your ideal dog.

May want to take a closer look at a Pug. I know two couples who say the little dogs are great with their kids. One couple lives in an apartment, the other in a duplex.
Training the puppy takes patience and time. Learning a new puppy tricks could be fun for the entire family.

I have Yorkshire Terriers. They stay small and don't get more than 7 pounds (usually; occasionally, you may get a larger yorkie). You could also try a Chihuahua. And, I'm not exactly sure how to potty train the puppy. You just have to start young. Be sure to take them out consistently, and discipline them when they do wrong.

you will possibly no longer believe this opinion, yet i actually think of small breed canine and extremely youthful young ones do no longer blend nicely. Small breeds with the aid of their nature are extra fragile than greater breeds and extra subject to wreck from tough toddlers. consequently, many breeders won't sell to those with youthful young ones. i could wait till the two young ones are a minimum of age 5 in the past getting a small canine. you in all probability already recognize that in spite of if the canine is a birthday present, the duty would be yours considering a 4-twelve months previous isn't sufficiently old to truly assume plenty duty for care.

You can search for the size, sex, age, etc. of dog you would like on Petfinder.com for your area. Choosing a slightly older dog rather than a puppy might avoid the problem of house-training. Also, older dogs may not cost as much, because they have had their shots and been spayed/neutered. Good luck!

as an owner of numerous different small breeds .. i have decided my favorite is the dachshund (mini or reg). i have 2 and they are the absolute best little dogs. i also have 2 small boys and live in a small house .. so i know what you mean about space, etc.
we crate trained both of ours .. takes time, patience and attention .. however .. eventually it will work.
GOOD LUCK!

It really depends on your children's age/ maturity level. you don't want to get an animal that's too small if your kids might accidentally hurt it. But teacup chiuahuas are cute and funny
