Last night our cat, Fluffy, was fine. This morning I noticed the base of his tail is very swollen. I looked at it as much as I could and didn't notice any wounds. He was not pleased with me when I touched it. He doesn't pick up his tail and he seems to be walking very careful. Also, his breathing seems short and somewhat rapid. He's eating fine and is willing to let me pet him as long as I don't touch the base of his back/tail.

I will take him to the vet this afternoon, but I wanted to get any feedback from the pros here. :)

Thanks!

UPDATE - Thanks for the answers. I took him to the vet. He was bitten by another cat and has a very infected tail, and now a shaved tail!

I would say an infected oil gland which are situated at the base of the tail sort just beside it he needs a vet visit as probably antibiotics are in order or it might be a abcess which are not visible sometimes on the skin.

The rapid breathing indicates he's in pain. It sounds like either his tail is broken or dislocated. Poor kitty! Be careful not to move it or pull it while taking him to the vet as this could make it worse!

It sounds like he may have injured it somehow while you were sleeping. Cats play really hard at night because they are nocturnal. He probably fell off of something and hurt it. Vet appointment is a good idea. Although, if he injured it, there may be nothing he can do but just let it heal.

He could have impacted anal glands. That is a common problem with lots of cats and dogs. Bring him to the vet! He/she will probably drain them and /or give antibiotics.

I think your best bet is the vet. No way that is right. I have 7 cats and I would whisk them there in a minute!
