It's too difficult to say, really. There were very few 500 mile races from 1949 to 1971. Maybe 1 or 2 per year. Many of Richard Petty's wins were races of 100 laps or less. For many years, the Petty organization was so far out ahead of everyone else. They always seemd to have the best equipment. Nowadays, it seems the Hendrick teams have the upper hand. It is truly unfair to judge unless you are looking at specific criteria. Wins, ok, Richard Petty. Starts? Richard Petty. Poles? Petty, again. Money? Jeff Gordon. Consecutive starts? Terry Labonte. Safety advances have enabled drivers to have longer careers, the prize money these days cannot be compared to "yesterday". That's my feeling on this subject.
