Right, you tried fruit and syrup of figs. Is your son drinking a lot of milk? That can cause constipation! Have you been to the doctor's? If you have to wait until you can get an appointment, go the chemist and ask for a bottle of LACTULOSE SOLUTION. Follow the directions and dosage on the bottle. You can put the liquid in water or fruit juice or squash. It will take a few days to work. How do I know this? I had a similar problem with my two year old!

It may be the fruits are are hurting him. If his stomach is sensitive, the acid from the fruits can upset him if he's getting too much. Plus when it comes out, it burns.

My daughter is two and a half and I think she was unfortunate enough to inherit my mild IBS. So we both have to be careful with that kind of stuff.

He won't be able to hold it forever. But you can get suppositories that will make him go.

We basically have to watch her diet and give her a balance of things that will keep her stool solid (dairy, etc.) and juices and things that will keep it softer ...

Something else we did is get alcohol-free "sensitive" type wipes that we keep in the bathroom in case a sore bottom occurs. That way she's not so apprehensive about it.

Lastly, I noticed an improvement in these episodes when we got her on a daily vitamin. We found the "gummy" type vitamins. She thinks she's getting candy every day because they're like gummy bears. And it's even her favorite, "Cinderella." She is the one that reminds us every day to get her vitamins. You might try that.

Poor guy ... I know how he feels.

his tummy is hurting because he hasn't been going. He is constipated and I don;t think you needed me to tell you that.
I would suggest that you cut any and every crap out of his diet (for example unecessary sugars, colours and preservatives).

I think he ought to go to the doctors to get him double checked. He/she may be able to give some medication with the problem.

Also with him being so young I would suggest a reward chart or some kind of prize. As corny as it sounds he will probably like it, remebering his age. A final thing that I would suggest is make sure he does keep a routine even if he doesn't actually produce a stool. This will help to lift any worries and anxieties of the toilet.

Hope this helps, and most of all don't worry it's far more common that you might think.

Try giving him food high in fiber everyday, that will help with constipation in adition to the fruits. In the mean time the doctor will probably be able to give him some sort of laxative to help him now. But the foods he eats regularly will determine if he has this problem all the time, or only once in a while.

Have you checked that there is nothing physically amiss?

Other ideas could be to massage his stomach in a circular motion, after a bath using baby oils herbal massage oils etc. Have him do cycling movements with his legs. You could make a game of it, both lying on your backs and cycling in the air. Get him to do more running around. Make sure he has 5 fruits and veggies a day. Give him porridge for breakfast. Make him drink WATER and plenty of it

Remember it has become an issue now and he probably won't push because it hurts. Good Luck

Take him to the doctor if his tummy pain is bad take him to the emergency room now. He may be backed up, compacted, because of his refusal to go to the bathroom. This requires medical attention.

You may have to modify this diet in the future so he does not have such hard stool. Like no chocolate and more fruits and veggies, but talk to your doctor.

After you get him checked out by the Dr I would suggest getting to drink orange juice etc to keep fibre in his diet. The Dr may prescribe a supository to help unblock him temporarily but it may be down to diet or as it was with me and my sons a case of the opening not being large enough and him getting 'backed' up.

I eventually had an operation to increase the opening in my late 20's it is called a rectal sphicterotomy.

My son also used to strain and 'split' but a change in diet was the cure for him. Keep a diet full of fibre going and most importantly LOTS of liquids!! It will make his stools soft so he can pass them easily.

Good choices of fluids include apple and prune juice and perhaps switching older children to soy milk. Reading food labels can help you to find high fiber foods.

What You Need To Know
If your child is having soft bowel movements, then she likely isn't constipated, even if she doesn't have one every day.
Some children with severe constipation develop a blockage, past which liquid stool sometimes leak, causing your child to have soiling accidents. This condition is caused encopresis.
Unlike laxatives, stool softeners used in children are not usually addictive and can be given every day if necessary. A common mistake is for parents to stop stool softeners once a child begins having soft bowel movements, only to have the child soon develop constipation again. Stool softeners are often used for 4-6 months and then slowly decreased to prevent reoccurances.
Miralax is a prescription strength stool softener that is odorless and tasteless and well tolerated by most children.
In addition to dietary changes and stool softeners, many kids with constipation need a 'clean out' regimen to help get backed up stool out.
You should not have to frequently use enemas or laxatives to help your child have a BM.

Hope it works out for you and him soon!

My nephew had the same problem. He point blank refused so much he ended up going to the doctors and had to have a laxative to make it runny and easier for him to pass. My sister used to praise him alot and offer a reward even for just sitting on the toilet.
