If you have a shortage of brain chemicals, such as nor epinephrine or serotonin, you don't want to take OTC medications. Only your doctor or a mental health expert can diagnose you with depression.

Antidepressants manufacture these brain chemicals for you, in order to minimize the depression symptoms. You need to see a doctor. Don't try to diagnose yourself.

I hope I understand the questions. No. Depression cannot be "cured" over the counter. Illegal drugs will worsen it. So will alcohol. I have been fighting it for a while. Counseling ( I do not recommend "group") some med.'s will help. Most of it is up to the person. If they are in a bad situation, they need to remove themselves. Exercise, eat right, positive thinking, forcing themselves to get out of bed and out of the house, doing different activities, and making friends will all help tremendously. These things take time. Depends on how depressed they are. Also on their determination to live. They need support and to keep trying. Hope this helps.

There are some meds that you can buy over the counter like St. John's Wort. You should speak to your doctor though, if you are having symptoms of depression you may need a anti depressant prescription to help you get over this. Sometimes your doctor will tell you about over the counter meds if they think that your depression is seasonal. Try taking walks this will clear your head and help you think better and give you energy. Your diet can help too eating lots of healthy foods will give you more energy as well..

Different anti-depressants can work in different ways. Most of them deal with the way neurotransmitters exchange chemicals between them. During depression, the transfer of a certain chemical ("sirotonin" if I am not mistaken) between neurotransmitters does not take place as it should. Anti-depressants fix this.

it binds to a receptor site in the brain this site usually binds with a substance called seritonin but with these sites full of the anit-depression drugs the seritonin cannot bind leaving a decrease in the overall active amount of seritonin in the brain.
