Look at the stuff that a lot of people do to their bodies WITHOUT God telling them to. Piercings, obesity, full-body tattoos, smoking... who's sadistic now? WE are.
Fact is that when the Bible was written, disease was a serious and society-destructive problem. Much of Jewish law seems odd to us now, but the fact of the matter was that cleanliness was a MUST to prevent epidemics from annihilating their civilization. That is what much of their law was all about. Look at medieval Europe or China and what happened when people did NOT take care to keep clean: plague. Something that might make you sick a couple of days now could kill thousands.
There is nothing dumb about it. Even today scientists suggest that a circumcised man is less likely to get HIV, because the folds of the skin collect bacteria and can hold onto viruses. Sadistic? No. Common sense? Yes.

Actually- there are very good spiritual reasons given for it (never mind the modern medical reasons that have been discovered like the health benefits in circumcision reducing susceptebility to various diseases.)
So the obvious reason for circumcision is because God wanted it there so it could be removed as a sign of his covenant with the Jewish people.
The less obvious reason is brough by the Ramban (Nacmanides- a 11th/12th century Rabbi). He teaches us that when God created the world- he deliberately left it imperfect in order to allow us to be partners with him in creation. Thus Shabat- our perfecting of the physical world to uplift it spiritually by refraining from melacha (creative work- not all work), and the necessity of building the Temple instead of just using a cave or something else as the home for the Holy of Holies.
Circumcision comes into that category- God created our bodies with a deliberate imperfection. We perfect the body, and simultaneously seal our covenant with God in being partners with him in creation- completing the last element that he left incomplete on the human body.

If God wanted you never to cut your nails or hair why do they grow? Or are you like Howard Hugh's and have nails that are 3 feet long?
It foreskin served its purpose in the womb and after that it has no significance.
Why do you shave?
Why do you brush your teeth?
Why do you cut your nails?
Why do yo cut your hair?
Why did god create them if he wants you to be constantly cutting, shaving and cleaning?
Come on be serious.

To differentiate between people who listen to God & do what he says, and everyone else. That should have been obvious to anyone who even gave it a moment of thought.
I believe that it was Phillip Yancey who made the keen observation that God put the sign of the covenant on a man's penis, so that he would have to be reminded of his promises to his god every time that he took it out, so to speak. So it would have been impossible for a practicing Jew to have sex without thinking about Yahweh and his covenant every single time.
Think for a moment about what impact that would have had on a man and his sex life.

The tradition began as a sign of a covenant between God and Abraham. Can't blame Christianity that the medical world adopted it as a common practice. If people don't want it, they can refuse it.

From the attitude of the Bible - Circumcision became right into a covenantal act for the tribes descending from Abraham. some tribes make huge holes of their earlobes others improve their necks with hoops others make a hollow in the lip others do scarification patters Australian aborigines make a lateral incision in the penis from base to tip (with the aid of fact the get right of entry to into adulthood ritual) some New Guineans split the shaft thoroughly (so as that they finally end up with 2) however the descendants of Abraham have been given circumcision. human beings have been made as creators and the physique is the 1st canvas of the human inventive impulse.

all males are born with foreskins, someone decided that if you cut them off you could become special,no foreskin then you were jewish and you could say your god told you to do it so you could be recognised as being the chosen ones.medicaly there are some good reasons for doing it under certain circumstances.generally most males do not have the choice to have it done, their parents decide it for them.i am lucky, mine left me the way i was born.to the females that have made comments on something that should not concern them it can be done to females too, live without a clitoris and see how you like it.

its really a very good question to think about. i think god made us with foreskins so that we can recognise the differences between two individuals, if he would have been created without it may be we all would not have been to be different.

if you havn't realized this by now alot of things in religion don't make sense, you can either choose to blindly follow a set path others determine for you . Or you can choose your own path and know that you did what you wanted and can have no regrets.
Women here are easy to say that foreskins are ugly but i can guarantee you they won't care about that at all and if they do than they are not worth it.
If women are that shallow than they can go out and buy one that suits them better.

I am not religious. but i don't like a penis with a turtle neck they are ugly and gross.
I also don't like pubic hair, so therefore i shave it all off.
Just cause you were born with it doesn't mean you have to keep it there. Woman shave their legs, arm pits.
Men shave their face.
