A pregnancy is measured by 40 weeks. The due date is an estimate and the doctor usually says that it can go either way by two weeks. 38 weeks is considered full term.

Human gestation is 38 weeks on average. That means that almost half will be longer and almost half will be shorter. Doctors count pregnancy to be about 40 weeks on average as are estimating the date of conception based on the woman's menstrual cycle and include the two weeks after her period before she is ovulating. Pregnancies are usually 9-10 months long.

In singletons (1 baby) the average is 38-42 weeks (with twins, triplets, etc being much shorter), with right down the middle being the most typical. A pregnancy is, however, full-term at 40 weeks. Postterm babies account for 20% of all deliveries.
