Navy life is difficult in both peace and war time. Not only is it hard on the sailors, but it is difficult on the loved ones they leave behind when on deployment.
It takes a strong committment on the part of the family of a sailor to withstand the pressures of long times away from home, with little or no contact.

Of course they get married and have kids. The only people in the Navy that aren't allowed to be married and have kids are the ones presently attending the Naval Academy.

Yes! Most definitely they get married. My Dad served 20 years and retired. My brother-in-law was a Naval Officer and a highly decorated Vietnam War Vet. His son (my nephew) graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis and just completed his obligation. All 3 were married and had kids. Myself, I had an Army ROTC scholarship and served in the Army whereas my oldest son joined the US Marine Corps Reserves while in college as an enlisted and went through some rigorous training at Parris Island SC and Camp Lejune NC. My Dad was lucky as much of his career bec he worked at BUPERS (Bureau of Naval Personnel) and handled enlisted assignments. One of first real hardships I faced growing up was in the 7th Grade when my parents decided we should not move so Dad took his next duty assignment about 4 hours away and he commuted to/from home every weekend that he was not the Duty Officer. Despite having 2 older sisters, it was really rough and lonely as the only son and youngest child. One thing he did always say about Navy life compared to the other military services (Army and Air Force) was that the service member in the Navy is often away from his/her family (spouse and kids) while on sea duty for extended periods of time. In comparison the Army tactical units if not deployed normally will rotate their wheels up ready to fight units during peace time through 3 different cycles (one which allows the service members time to take trainning). Supposely the Air Force is the preferred choice in terms of offering the best family life.
Some other things that might interest you is that once a servicemember is married and has dependents, all the military services will provide what is referred as non-taxable pay housing allowances each month plus they will issue dependent ID cards allowing you to use the commissary (grocery store), Base/Post Exchange as well as local military hospital etc. If you are lucky to move on base, then you basically give up/forfeit your monthly housing allowance. Sometimes it is preferred as normally the spouse of your husband's unit commander will do her best to mingle the spouses together with coffees etc to offset the loneliness etc Overseas if the military service member is given what is referred to as an accompanied assignmment, the service allows you to move your spouse and dependents overseas at Government expense where they will also provide DOD dependent schooling and normally the American dependents really bond and start many lasting friendships.
Best of Luck!

All military forces have an extremely high divorce rate, fyi.
Speaking from personal experience, I know that it was common for soldiers in "the rear" to celebrate when a unit was deployed, because they knew a good portion of the deployed soldier's wives would be out at the bars that weekend, getting drunk, and cheating with the first guy to buy them a drink.
You don't have to believe that. I'm just passing on what I saw with my own eyes... :)

I was in the Navy for 6 years...
Once you are finished with bootcamp and school...it's just like any other job...with just a little extra travel.
I was married and had a little boy when I was in.
I loved it. There is no bond between those in the civilian sector as there is with those in the military...
If you join you will understand.
