It can't. At least not by what science has shown us so far. Now don't be confused though, evolution doesn't say something came from nothing. Evolution explains how life evolved and came to be what it is today. But it does not give any answer as to how the universe originated in the first place. The origin of the universe is the only question that requires that something come from nothing, that is if you're leaving an intelligent designer out of the picture. When you bring intelligent design into the picture, or God (or gods), atheists will ask "well who created God?". What it boils down to is that something has had to exist for all eternity. In other words something has had no beginning, therefore something has never come from nothing. So that leaves 2 options: This "something" that has always existed is either an intelligent being or a non-intelligent, universe producing (and who knows what else it could produce) mechanism or force.
Because we are intelligent beings, the logical, rational and reason based line of thinking is that we were created by an intelligent being.

I have to laugh at the people who are most critical then offer no explantion. Most likely because they have none and ridicule is the best evasive defense line. When you think about it there are only a few choices. Something came from nothing. Something always existed or An eternal spirit not subject to physical restraint created it. I would suggest if you get an opportunity to read the book the case for the creator by Lee Strobel. In it he speaks to a number of scientists and they look at a number of variations of these options.

The biggest secret of the universe. How did this whole thing get started. What was it like 5 minutes prior to the creation of the universe. It is really hard for the human mind to grasp the concept of nothing. For instance, the big bang theory suggest the the universe imploded on itself; however, nothing cannot explode on itself. An implosion and/or explosion requires the sudden conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy. If there is truly nothing, then there is no potential energy to be converted. The forces necessary for an implosion/explosion do not exist in nothing. Maybe it is just me, but the more I learn about the different sciences, the more the theory of intellegent design makes sense. Granted I've been a Christian my entire life; but, I have questioned most of my beliefs to this point and I remain a Christian. We will all find out sooner or later. Hey maybe God is on Yahoo Answers and he will share the answer with us. If not, we'll have to wait and see.

Your question sounds sincere. If you'd really like to find out the answers to these things there are many sources for such information.
But excuse me if I don't try writing a long treatise on the subject myself - I've wasted time on that before.
First I should point out that the birth of the universe is not a subject covered by evolution, which only deals with the proliferation of existing life forms.
If you're interested in the universe, check out the Big bang on Wikipedia
If you want to know about the origins of life, check out Abiogenesis.
When you've done them, read up on Evolution for the rest of the story.

I love the guy who says you must have flunked grade school science then offers absolutely no answer. Nice. I was an honor student my whole life and I don't recall performing any "something from nothing" experiments. I'm open to the possibility of something from nothing but it has never been demonstrated to my satisfaction.

Postulating that your god did it merely pushes the question back an additional step.
How you could your god come from nothing?
Why should he not require a cause, or a designer, when everything else does?
Isn't it just TOO convenient that, by fiat, you get to declare him as not needing to follow the rules?
That sort of "reasoning" may be good enough for YOU; but don't expect the rest of us to be taken in by it....

who told you you're getting something from nothing? this is not an explanation i've ever heard. if this is your understanding of science and evolution it's no wonder you use god as an example to answer all your questions.

it just isnt possible, nothing can come from something, it is the second law of thermodynamics, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only changed into matter and vise-versa, God spoke=energy, he changed it into matter
