First I shall start with the idea that all religions are void, thus why I don't believe in God.

I don't believe in a Creator simply because I don't believe there to be one.

We can get into reasons, but that's about 12 years worth of work crammed into one paragraph

As a child I always wanted to believe in God, I mean everyone else did so I thought I should, too. Otherwise, I thought I would be a bad person and go to hell.

So I went to church and learned about Jesus and tried to believe but I knew deep down the bible just wasn't true. No matter what anybody said it just seemed more and more obvious that church was simply made up. The Bible does have good stories and Jesus was an exceptional man but beyond that there is nothing I have seen to suggest that anything supernatural exists. For example, how can someone truly believe that a human being was completely dead for days but came back to life and floated into the sky up to some perfect utopia of happiness. It just doesn't make sense.

So basically, questions like those became harder and harder to answer, and the dawning realization that everyone had lied to me about the reality of the Bible, culminated in my now fervent understanding that there is no God. Whether he be Christian, Muslim, or Pagan (in addition to all goblins, ghosts, and unicorns) - there is no God and the more I say it the better it feels.

I hope this helps you understand why someone wouldn't believe in God and that atheists aren't shallow people that just want to be different.

1. There is not one single shred of evidence for the existence of any god. If there was, that left no possible room for an alternative explanation, I'd believe. But there isn't. So I don't.

2. You know how you don't believe in Zeus? Can you imagine how bizarre that must seem to a Hellenic Pagan? That's the same as us not believing in your god.

3. Other people aren't you. Projecting your presuppositions about the world onto others just because you can't empathize with their personal capacity to answer the same questions differently is not a flaw with them, it is a flaw with you.

4. If we wanted to be different we'd join one of these tiny little insane cults. Atheists are enlarging in numbers worldwide. And the only thing we have in common is non-belief in gods.

5. The Abrahamic god is a sociopathic monster.

Because God seems pretty evil, or at least the people who claim to be his followers paint him that way.

Why would anyone believe that an omniscient, all-powerful being would care what humans are doing? Doesn't that seem a little like hubris? There are all these arbitrary rules, and all the followers can say is that they were "inspired" by God and this is a test of faith.

Sorry, the Abrahamic god is a monster, and his followers made him that way. A truely all-powerful being wouldn't waste their time threatening eternal torture. That's a human concept, to force conformity.

Please disabuse yourself of the notion that atheists are really just closet theists. Impossible as it may sound to you, fake atheists, if they exist at all, are pretty thin on the ground.

You, after all, probably have no difficulty not believing in Zeus - or even Allah if you're a Christian.

Being convinced that there is no god is a lot less difficult than you might think.

(By the way, why do you think anyone would 'mark this as inappropriate? Do YOU report questions for such trivial reasons?)

There is no way I can sum up for you in one post on Yahoo! Answers why I don't believe in God so I will suggest that you read one of the following books if you are truly interested in why Atheists don't believe in God:

End of Faith by Sam Harris
Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris
The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins

You are sadly mistaken if you think that Atheist really do believe in God and that we just "want to be different". Do you believe in God simply because you want to be the same as everyone else? Do you believe in God because you want to be a part of a group? I doubt the answer to either one of those questions was yes so it is safe to assume that we don't hold our beliefs for such a ridiculous reason. Why would someone who believed in God deny his existance if they thought that would land them in an eternity in Hell?

I think the shoe is on the other foot. Religious people say they believe but deep down they know there’s no god. If they truly believed they would sell everything and give it the poor.

Now a question for you… why don’t you believe in Hermes? Well it’s the same reason Atheists don’t believe in your god, they know it’s mythology. What’s not to understand?

There is not single shred of evidence to show the existance of a god or gods and no I don't believe in a god,not even deep down inside.

No, deep down we don't believe in God. In fact, I wonder if theists really believe. They say they are confident that their religion ensures that they will go to heaven when they die. They say that heaven is a much better place than Earth. So why are they afraid of dying? Religion people get sick, they go to the hospital. Why don't they just let the illness kill them, and go to heaven?

I don;t believe in gods because it is an illogical proposition.

i believe what can be proven. Feel free to prove your god exists and I will believe in it. I will likely not worship it, however. Most I have seen described are tyrannical, hateful, and oppressive and not worthy of my worship.
