for those muslimahs that attend the mosque prayers...how do you find the atomosphere within the mosque concerning ladies being there?

1. Are you welcomed and made to feel at home?
2. Does your mosque have one large prayer area or are women separated by either a curtain or wall?
3. Are there community activities that encourage womans participation?
4. Have you ever had a negative experience while attending the mosque that made you feel unwelcome?

I ask because I love to attend the mosque...especially during Ramadan and I have heard stories that a great deal of American mosques are not very welcoming of women. Has any muslimah found this to be true?

Hi,
At my mosque the men and women sit on different sides of a big room when the speaker is talking. and the prayer room is also large and we are not separated by anything we just sit with the other women. I have never had a negative experience at my mosque. Everything is usually regular and flows smoothly. Its nice. Ramadan is my favorite part in my mosque! Its so spiritual at that time of year for both men and women. Feels like Im back in Lebanon as soon as I walk in there!

Asalaamu alaikum, Sister!

My mosque is in Alabama. I love it there!!! It is in an academic community and is smaller than the ones in the bigger cities. I like it better than the bigger ones where it's harder to get to know people, although more activities may be offered.

Men and women are separated by a curtain, but we have a tv monitor mounted to the wall so that we can see what's going on. During more informal events, such as lectures on Friday nights, the curtain is pulled back and women are more involved in asking questions. Our Sunday school classes are mixed with brothers and sisters, but no male and female ever sit alone!

We have a pretty active group of Sisters! We have gatherings usually once a month at least at some sister's house. For the most part, I've felt welcomed from the beginning. I'm a bit shy, and it takes me a little while to "feel" people out. But that's my problem, not anyone else's!

May Allah ease your transition back to the US!

I've been to a couple mosques in the US though I'm not Muslim - in one (in the Northeast), women and men sat on different sides of a big room during Jummah, in another (in NY), women were relegated to the back, behind a partition. Still, women were welcome in both.

Ignore that Proud Muslim clone she's an idiot who hates Muslims.

I live in the UK sister not America so really i cannot answer your question but i have never known a mosque in the UK to make me feel nothing but welcome. I love to go to regents park mosque in London it has a wonderful atmosphere.
I hope you get some genuine answers from sisters in the US and insha Allah you will find nothing but positive and welcoming answers.
