I Have a Ranger with a 3.0 liter V6 and its passed inspection and at very high rpm's the makes a clicking noise, the only thing i can discripe it as a spark plug wire arching. But i just put in brand new wires and plugs. I dont know if this helps but its a 4wheel drive with 41,000 miles and a Aem short ram intake. and its never abused

Thanks abut its not the a/c clutch. I dont use the a/c alot of the time bc of the climate, also it usually clicks really fast just as its getting to redline, It never does it if i shift under 3K RPM only a very high RPMs. A higher octane gas hasent helped. I ran 93octane in it for an entire month. Does anyone know how much it would cost to just change out the lifters if that is indeed the problem?

lifter tap - - - - -

You can drive it and probably put another 200,000 on it no problem

another thing to remember are the fuel injectors make a tapping noise that change with rpm, ford injector tend to be louder than most other car makes, if you are concerned with it being lifters you could try using a full synthetic oil to see if it helps reduce the noise, if you are still convinced that it might be lifters youd better have the better part of the day to deticate to it if you do it at home. but i would check to see if it is the injectors which are pretty common but there usually isnt much to do since installing new ones will eventually do the same thing, or try the synthetic oil since it has better lubricating properties than conventional and blend, i rec. either mobil 1 or valvoline and make sure its the correct gradefor your vehicle which i think might be 5w30 for a 98, look at the fill cap it will either only have a pic or it will say 5w20 on it but im sure you know what it takes anyways but it mihgt help

Its a Ford thing, every Ford Engine has that clicking noise after about 30,000 miles on the engine for some reason the valve lifters will start clicking, really bad until the truck warms up and then it lets up a little but never does go away. Even after new valve lifters are installed it will go back to doing the same thing.

How fast is the clicking? As in, with the engine rpms, or just every few seconds?
Just curious if you might be hearing the a/c clutch cycling.

Try putting a higher grade of gas in for a while and see if that helps, and change your filter, hope this helps
