My friend has an 8 year old girl as her "sister" in Big Brothers/Big Sisters and needs something free to do with her. She is always wanting to do things that cost money and she wants to do something for free.

MAN THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR AN 8 YEAR OLD IS GO TO WALMART GET A $7 SLIP N SLIDE, SOME SIDE WALK CHALK FOR ABOUT $2 BUCKS, AND ALOT OF BUBBLES AND WATER GUNS, IN ALL YOU WILL SPEND ABOUT 20 BUCKS, AND I HAVE NOT HAD TO LEAVE THE HOUSE IN 3 WEEKS NOW. THEY JUST WANT TO PLAY IN OUR YARD NOW. I HAVE A TEN YEAR OLD GIRL AND 2 TODDLERS. PLUS ALL THE NEIGHBOR KIDS COME OVER NOW, AND THEY PLAY OUTSIDE ALL DAY LONG. ITS AWSOME!

Take her to a park, take a walk on a trail, go to a museum, have a picnic, play video games, soccer, basketball. The big sister can have the little sister help her cook and make dinner, and they can eat together. They can grill out together. Painting and coloring are nice activities for an 8 year old. Take the kid to a pet store or to the humane society and play with the animals, that's usually a big hit with kids. Hope you found something useful here.

She can take her to the park, have a picnic, do crafts with her, take her to the library for story time, read to her, make up a treasure hunt...in short, there are many things she can do. If her little "sister" only likes to do things that cost money, then the little sister is not enjoying the relationship they might have. Perhaps the place to start would be to have a conversation with the sister about what she likes, and go from there.

My eight year old daughter enjoys being taken to the park, she loves to go on walks and feed the ducks/birds. Some museums are free entry, perhaps the child would enjoy a trip round there, my daughter has on two occasions... Both of my daughters really enjoy going for a picnic, that's reasonibly ceap enough... She could check local farms and such like, all children love animals so maybe a trip/walk up to there would keep her amused for a while... The beach is always free in nice weather providing its not too far to visit... Indoors, crafts are always a good place to start, most children are creative and enjoy making and painting things.

High Five to your friend for doing this!

** take her to do some volunteer work herself and get her started on the path to being involved in the community (nursing homes, check into ages for visiting/walking dogs @ various animal shelters, sort donations at local goodwill, salvation army, etc)

check with local museums (art, natural, etc) - sometimes they have free days or free hours
libraries often have activities scheduled - not all are storytimes
bookstores usually have activities scheduled too - music, community theatre, all sorts of odds ends

see if the parent would get her involved in Girl Scouts then could help her work on badges and community service

teach her to throw/catch a ball, cartwheels, etc

michaels craft stores usually have free hands on craft projects scheduled

make brownies, cupcakes, etc together

go on a hike/picnic - don't forget water and sunscreen

walk around downtown

Best wishes to your friend

They should do volunteer work. They can collect old clothes and donate them to various charities or volunteer to clean up the park or plant trees. Many cities during certain times of the year organize events like this. They can go to a nursing home and read to the elderly, join a walk-a-thon to raise awareness of certain issues. There are many upon many ways to help others. This would definitely shape this little girl's life in many positive ways. At such a tender age she will recognize the need to give back and discover the true joy of giving at the same time. It will also help her social skills to fluorish as she will interact with people of all walks of life; what a privilege this would be. =D

Maybe go to the park and look at birds and see if they can find those birds in maybe like an encyclopedia ,you know nature things . or maybe get some sidewalk chalk and draw things on the sidewalk .An occasional movie does not hurt either just make sure it is kid appropriate . I hope i helped.
