because the Buddha WAS the most peaceful person...and i believe his teachings really WERE true because you never hear anyone killing in the name of Buddhism do you?!
and THIS is WHY:
The Buddha======
"Do not honour only your religion and disrespect others' religions.You must honour every religion.There is something to be learnt from everything and as humans learning is an integral part of life.One can never have too much of education
oh and i'm not a Buddhist-so this is my unbiased opinion :)

Because the core of the Buddhist teachings is about loving care for all beings. When a Buddhist practitioner cultivates "Bodhicitta" he/she is cultivating a mind (including thought, action, feeling and speech) totally dedicated to others and to achieving full enlightenment in order to benefit all sentient beings as fully as possible.
In Mahayana Buddhism, one cannot achieve full enlightenment until the motivation of the practice becomes totally altruistic. This altruistic motivation is the main difference between Buddhism and all other religions and I guess is the reason why the United Nations chose the Buddha's birthday as International day of peace.

When is the last time you heard of people killing in the name of Buddha?
That is why the man and his philosophy are the icon of peace and goodwill. The other major religions have all shed major blood in the name of their deity.

Why not pass it around. The United Nations is the generic political center, the generic legal center, the generic religious center for a generic quality of life in a generic world; where nothing works and everybody is finally equal.

What is your objection to it?
Why others & NOT BUddha?
Has He been Black-listed?
Buddha is great in His own right! None can deny this Universal Fact.
Remember, Our religion is just ONE of the PATHS to Realize the TRUTH & Not the ONLY path! We don't know much about 'the Road Not Taken'. 'Judge not ye be not judged!'
Anyone can & has the Birth Right to follow any religion he / she believes in or negate all religions in toto.
Let's not be Zero-tolerant & JudgeMENTAL!

maybe they felt it would create less friction if it was Buddha's birthday or maybe it was a coincidence.
