I'm always surprised by how many pagans think that Lucifer is Satan. It's like they've never picked up a mythology book.

They think that just because the Bible (which should mean nothing to them) says that Lucifer is Satan, they *must*, as pagans, therefore believe it. This always makes me laugh a little.

Even some modern "Wiccans" (usually the young ones) don't realise that Lucifer is a god in their religion. They don't realise that a number of the sources Wicca drew upon (i.e. Gospel of the Witches, Leland) had Lucifer as a god of witches.

Why don't people realise that Lucifer was a Roman deity of light and Venus, before Christianity got its hands on him?

P.S. Lucifer has no place in the Bible. It was a mistranslation by St Jerome. The original word was 'heylel'. So to lizardman - learn your facts. Christians shouldn't steal pagan names, ideas or characters.

I've known that for years. Lucifer was a God of light, symbolically represented by the planet Venus, whose consort was Diana. The one verse in the bible that uses the name Lucifer was actually referring to a babylonian king, and not the Christians' devil anyway. The reason why the two became associated was purely through the direct actions of the Catholic church, who at the time were trying to abolish Paganism.

Double check on the Roman gods part he was just the bringer of Dawn not the god of light. Little bit of a difference because you know how those wacky Roman's are.

Anyways it seems you are trying to say that because the Romans where polytheistic that they where pagans which is false.

Lucifer and Satan at some point in history got mixed together and became interchangeable as far as the mass of people is concerned. Yes it is incorrect to say Lucifer and Satan are the one but to most people they are just names that symbolize the ruler of Hell.

Also just because the Wiccans drew upon a number of sources doesn't mean they have to take every bit of thing from those sources. Sure one of the primary sources may have been the Gospel of the Witches. That does not mean they took everything from it and made it their own. The Wiccan religion has evolved and grown and part of that evolution is that Lucifer is not their god.

Actually, no. Lucifer is not Satan.

Lucifer is the child of Dawn, he is the morning star, (yes, Venus) "Shining One". By the Greeks, he is called Eosopherus. (Not Pan or Prometheus as someone else mentioned, completely different dudes here)
He is not Satan. I don't know why the Christians call Satan Lucifer. Wasn't Satan a good enough name? (Actually, I heard it had something to do with the fact that Venus descends below the horizon and then reappers, so Eosopherus/Lucifer appears to "fall from the heavens" or be cast down.)

I dunno.

Course, maybe it's like the name Bob in the spirit world? I guess more than one spirit could have the same name, eh?

The Gospel of the Witches doesn't have anything to do with Wicca...
Lucifer is NOT a Wiccan God.

Well actually Lucifer was taken by the Romans from Prometheus and has older roots than that. You are right about the idea that the Christians mixed up Lucifer and Pan and then equated them with Hebrew Satan. At the same time that they did this they made Lucifer/Prometheus/Pan/Satan into another Christian God. So in that general sense Lucifer in common reference is Satan and is a Christian God used to represent temptation and opposition. The Genesis parallel of Satan giving learning like Prometheus did is the worst part of it. That part of the story and the new testament adition of Satan being chained and tortured like Prometheus is the strongest showing of the Christian tendency to steal the stories of the religions around them.
To bad they missed the point that Pan was just the life force of nature and Prometheus/Lucifer was regarded as a Noble benefactor who was unjustly punished by the jealous and vindictive Gods.
Lucifer bringing light, Prometheus fire, meant the start of technology and our rise to civilization instead of remaining as dumb beasts.

I have always known Lucifer isn't Satan. Originally he was the Arch Angel of White Light until he was cast out by God. I still believe Lucifer is NOT evil and is a pagan God.

Actually, the bible DOESN'T say that Lucifer is Satan.
There is only one passage that uses the name Lucifer in Isaiah, and it's a mistranslation of the name Hallel. It does not refer to Satan, but to a babylonian king who had tormented the Hebrews for many years.. it dicusses his downfall.
Christians have misinterpreted this scripture for years.

The name Satan is also a play on the Egyptian God Set. The difference between Pagans and Christians is that we don't believe they are PURE evil. Nothing is purely one way or the other. There would be no balance. So no, they aren't the same thing, even if the names are shared.

The Archangel Michael is truthfully Jesus Christ. I too determined it rough to be given to start with until I did a few extensive learning. I additionally discovered that Lucifer was once Jesus' brother. Most stunning of all was once whilst I found out God produced BOTH of them by means of having intercourse together with his spouse/one in every of his other halves. I recognize this may increasingly sound blasphemous to many individuals bit it's precise. God DOES have intercourse! Angels have intercourse too.

Lucifer was the most beautiful of all God's angels. He decided that he wanted more power than God. God, of course, sent Lucifer and His followers down to a fiery pit.
This is what the Bible says. The Bible is truth written by God, and mythology is just that, a story. I will choose to believe the truth.
