You did not mention what is the type of attachment.

However, if you can open the attachment, delete the contents SAVE and close the file.

When you close your mail (containing attachments) choose to SAVE. This will delete the contents of your attachments (in Outlook)

If you want to get rid of an attached file, simple delete the email that it is attached to. If you really want the content of the email itself, but not the attachment, copy the body of the e-mail into a new e-mail, and then delete the old one with the attachment.

Received or to send?
If you don't trust the sender, delete the whole thing, DO NOT open the attachment, many viruses are sent through attachments.
If it is your own attachment, bring up the attachment and edit it there.
