'Distributed computing' doesn't really slow your pc down, the programs use your screensaver time to do calculations, you then e-mail the results back to the parent company.
SETI analyse radio signals from outer space, looking for signs of intelligent life. You can also help with medical research from other sites.
You really shouldn't download and install software if you don't know the company or what the program does, theres a lot of fake stuff out there that just installs spyware. The SETI screensaver is safe to use, but oyu should install MAcAffee Site advisor and goole any sites in future.
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

SETI is the "Search for Extra-Terristrial Intelligence". It is an attempt to talk to UFOs and aliens. The SETI group tracks hundreds of hours of "sounds" from outer space, and then has to run them through a "listening" program to see if they can hear UFOs in the recordings. SETI@Home allows them send part of that recording to your PC, and it listens to it and send back the results. Keeps SETI from having to buy hundreds of computers of their own.
Running SETI@Home will slow your computer, as "they" are using part of you memory, hard drive, processor and Internet speed.
But on the other hand, you might be the person who makes the "first contact"....

dewcoons is correct. It actually a fun thing to be involved in.
I just wanted to warn you. ALWAYS know what something is BEFORE you start installing. There is nothing wrong with Seti, but, it may work better on an old system you not use and just allow it to do its thing and not tie up your main computer.

The SETI software only launches processes when the system is idle.
