Any wedding starting after 5pm is considered an evening wedding. If your ceremony started at 5pm then your reception would probably start around 6pm or 6:30pm (given time for photos, transport to reception location , if different, etc.). The time of day also has a lot to do with the formality of your wedding. After 5pm is considered on the formal to ultra-formal side.

You may choose a morning wedding, an afternoon wedding or an evening wedding that is your choice. Usually with a morning wedding your receptionist is held later in the day ... around 4:00 pm. If an afternoon wedding... say 2 pm the reception would start around 1/2 hour to 45 minutes after the wedding is over. If you have an evening wedding 7 pm the reception again starts 1/2 hour to 45 minutes after the wedding. Keep in mind the length of your wedding, if you are going to have a full church service it will push your reception out later..and a typical wedding only takes about 20 minutes.

Ceremony usually starts at 5 or 6 pm. Mine started at 5(it was about 30 min long), and cocktail hour started immediately after(when guests got to the reception site)...that was probably around 6pm. Dinner was served at 7 so there was plenty of time to party!

a quick answer is 'whatever suits the two of you'
but, considering your friends and guests as well -- a ceremony anytime between 4:00 to 6:30 with a reception starting no later than 6:30 or 7:00 pm. is probably reasonable

The later, the better. Unfortunately most churches won't allow weddings much later than 7pm. The reception can follow immediately. We usually take pictures before the wedding.

it all depends on the church. some churches wont allow weddings past 2:00 pm because of five oclock mass. I told our priest that i wanted a short ceremony, no mass and he let me get married at 4:00 p.m. so the reception started at 6:00 pm and ended at 11:00 p.m. it was a perfect amount of time in between for pictures ect... good luck
